p.1 #1 · Which 5D looks better?

I hate to ask another gear question... I am going to pick up a second FF body to use along side of my 5D classic. I am debating between a 5D mk1 or 2. I LOVE the tones out of the mk1, I have used the mk2 once... i like the little upgrades, but I am not convinced the IQ (although different) is preferable to me yet. I find the 5D very film-like, and the 5D2 crisper, contrasty, but a bit more digital looking. What do you think?

Pls vote purely from the standpoint of image quality or the "look" you prefer, I find them different, but which do you prefer? I know there are alot of other reasons to get a mk2.

Thanks!

I sold my 5DII initially to get a 3rd 5D and some glass (instead ended up with a 1dsmkII, and then another). I felt the exact same way you did about the files, but also, could not push the files as much when needed do to low ISO banding (will NOT start the debate again here). 5D (or 1dsII) all the way - many will disagree, to each their own.

5D2. That said, there are folks that prefer the 5D original. Files on the mark too are so clean and striking. That said, different lenses provide differenet looks, contrasts and color.

Finding that the T/S lens is VERY contrasty.

I have to say I have not yet once found problems with banding in real-world usage. If you expose anywhere near where you need to, you should have plenty of room to play. But I'm not going to say banding doesn't exist... I like my 5D Mark II though, FWIW. I find the extra resolution to be very nice. Noticeably sharper images than the old 5D.

45 T/S really? I am not yet on the T/S train... I first hated it when I first saw them coming out in wedding photography, but its slowly growing on me. Maybe ppl are getting better at using them... the best shot I've seen being spencers stadium shot in his last eshoot.

Thanks for the input guys.

wish i never bought a mk2. the tones are not nearly as good, at least how i shoot. RAW users wont see as much of a difference in color, and yes, as sam said the images are more "striking, crisp". but it's achieved by ditching the good midtones, and rather than skin being more warm and red, its more brown/yellow. with that said, the screen, menus, video, etc etc are all awesome, and why i dont switch back to the 5d1.

1Ds2 and 5D1 are the best for image look and tone...

I find I can get the crisp/contrast I want now that I invested in the 35L and 85L... so I might just pick up another 5D original gangster. I will deal with the clunky body and lack of features for now until the next model.... which should also have some "modern" AF.

the reason why I posted this though, is because I keep flip flopping. Everytime I see a picture from Ryan Flynn (my fav inspiration here) I want to keep the 5Ds going... then I see Sam or Tonys stuff.... I'm convinced the 5D2 is the way to go... I'm too promiscuous, good thing cameras don't have feelings!

If clunkiness and AF is why you want a 5D2, the bodies are almost the same (the 5D2 grip feels nicer), and the AF is exactly the same - useless in even average light on the outer points, decent in the center.

FWIW, Sam and Tony both can make the same amazing images they do now with the original 5D's (and they did - check their blog histories! ) it has very little to do with the cam. Get the original 5D and glass!

I know thats why I am waiting for the next generation... Are you sure Tony and Sam are talented enough to make amazing images with ONLY a 5D mk1.... I dont buy it

Okay, so I'm lying. Sam uses a 1DsMkV prototype only, and Tony gets a real pro to shoot for him by threatening to stop by his wife's office naked and show her what's up.

I hope you are right, because I am making some threatening phone calls to your girlfriend right now

I chose the 5D2, but really, I find them both equally pleasing.... the 5D2 just has the extra resolution so you can do some BIGGER things with it.

+1

Love the clarity of 5D2, but it's getting a bit annoying trying to fix skin tones which can be too red sometimes. High ISO noise can't be beat though.
