Hi there

I just found out that I will be spending 10 days in Guatemala in early February. I am really looking forward to it. I fly into Guatemala City and then plan to visit:

  1. Antigua
  2. Lake Atitlán
  3. Chichicastenango
  4. Tikal

For those of you who have been to Guatemala before, do you have any other suggestions? All information is greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Roel

You''ve picked some of the best areas to visit. When I was there we were driving through to the States and had limited time so we saw three of your four:

Lake Atitlan in late afternoon for the best light and for sunset shots. If you can spend the night there, then you can get good shots in the morning too. One of the prettiest lakes I've ever seen.

Sunday morning is a must for Chichicastenango so you can shop the market. Be prepared to haggle. Lots of color in the marketplace.

Antigua has both volcanoes and Spanish ruins for great photos.

We didn't make it to Tikal.

There's a park in Guatemala City that has a country map on the ground. You go up in a small tower to look at it.

Prepare to be hot, moist, itchy (mosquitos), and mildly nauseous (quinine pills).

I hope you're bringing something useful, and not just bibles and myths about zombie saviours...

A few hammers here and there. I am mainly going to take camera gear. Which brings up a question.

I have a Canon XTi with 50mm f1.8, 18-55 kit lens, and 55-250 f5. I am looking to either find something on ebay, borrow or rent another lens for this trip. I want something with a little more range and a better f. What would you all reccommend?

it depends on the budget and what you are doing with it. 300F4LIS prime is best quality more reach for reasonable$1400?. 70-200f2.8ISL is really good for inside shots $2000. 70-200LISF4 is considered by many to be best IQ on zoom $1200. I really like the reach of my 100-400ISL at $1600 but it is not as fast as the 300LF4 but more versatile.

see http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/793990/0?keyword=which,lens#7310771 for some input on got on a similar quest.
