p.1 #1 · Contax N 24-85 Zoom Creep?

I just purchased a really mint version of this. Am very pleased with the compact size and smooth focus and zoom feel. Am getting ready to ship it for conversion.

In using it, I noticed that is shows zoom creep when pointed straight up or down, or about 10 degrees off of vertical. It will creep through its entire range Is this normal? I was a little surprised because the zoom feels well damped.

Also, a very few times, there is a little "squeak" when autofocusing. Does not seem to interfere with focusing and it usually does not recur unless the lens has set for a while (like overnight). Any insight would be appreciated.

Just want to see if I need to have the lens adjusted or lubricated.

Thanks!

Zoom creep is very common with older Contax one touch zooms. The N zooms should be better since they use separate rings for zooming and focusing, but if your lens has it, it would not be very surprising. In fact all zooms will eventually suffer from creep with age and usage.

Many N lenses have been sitting on shelves not seeing much use. This is very bad for the internal grease which can dry and cause this kind of squeaking. I would expect this to improve with some usage as the grease will spread to the unused areas, but if not, I would recommend to have the lens serviced by Zeiss (not going to be cheap).

Zeiss doesn't service these lenses. Only Kyocera, or essentially those Kyocera has contracted the service to. Actually, the cost isn't so bad (probably under $200).

Edward,

Thanks. I will send for service once I get it back, or maybe Bo-Ming can arrange it for an extra charge.

The front glass element is large and heavy so some creep does not surprise me. Because it only happens at or near true vertical I'm not to worried about it.

Shot some velvia on my old N1. Can't wait to see the slides but even better have it back and ready to go for my 5D2! Am also converting a 100 makro and a 400 teleapotessar, all to go with my 17-35. Zeiss on Canon--heaven!

My 24-85 creeps a little too. I tend to overlook that when I view the really nice images it produces for what it is (a zoom). Don't be surprised if the lens works better after Bo-Ming gets his hands on it. He is known at times to do more than just convert it to EOS ( He actually fixed a dysfunctional AF for me once...no charge. Sort of what you expect from a class act).

(BTW...the 400 will blow your socks off, no exageration)

yep mine creeps too, the odd time. as has been mentioned
it is to be somewhat expected of the design.

I find the camera tends to sit more horizontal with the strap
as the 24-85 has such a SLIM profile for the range it covers
so it doesnt point down that much.

Mine has a feint squeek too at one end, still works great
and the focus is quick and precice, but not as quick as the
canon USM obviously.
