Guys I'm sure a stupid question, how can I make CS4 32 bit my default and not the 64 bit version running Windows7. Most of my Plug-Ins are only 32 bit compatible so a pain when I transfer a image from DPP or Bridge or even LR and the 64 bit Version opens up instead of the 32 Bit version.
Open 32 bit CS4 before you open an image from Bridge or Lightroom or anywhere else. If neither is open, the image will open in 64 bit unless you already have 32 bit open. At least, that's been my experience.

He explained that in the OP. Some of his plug-ins don't work in the 64-bit version.
Ah, ok. I didn't know CS4 is also 64-bit, I asumed CS4 is 32-bit and only the OS is 64-bit. Hmm, I have to check my plug-ins I use, since I ordered Windows 7 and a SSD.
The only disadvantage is that the 32 bit version cannot access more than 3.25 GB of memory, just like a 32 bit operating system.
I'm currently forced to use the 32 bit version because I have the full Nik suite of plug ins and Nik has not updated them to work in 64 bit CS4. They have announced a new version of Vivesa that is 64 bit compatible, but the upgrade is USD $99. No doubt over the coming months they will upgrade the rest of their products at similar cost. A blatant cash grab, in my opinion.
Let's say I have 8 GB of memory installed. Photoshop cannot use more then 3.25 GB of memory, but because I use a 64-bit OS, the remaining 4.75 can be used by Windows? Is this correct? If so, then using 32-bit CS4 is not so bad, because it can use much more memory, because the OS can use the remaining.
Yes, if you install Photoshop CS4 on a computer with a 64 bit OS, it will install both the 32 and 64 bit versions and you can use either. If you have plugins that have not been upgraded to 64 bit, then you can open and use them in the 32 bit version of CS4, which will only use approximately 3.25 GB of memory or RAM. If you open the 64 bit version of CS4 then it will use as much of that 8 GB as you assign to it under Preferences. Adobe recommends 70%.
However, your OS will use as much RAM as is available, in this instance 8 GB. So, if you are working in PS CS4 32 bit, that program will use up to 3.25 GB and if you have other programs open, such as email, a browser, a word processor, etc. they will all continue to run well because there is still sufficient RAM available to them to run efficiently.
While computing is moving towards a 64 bit environment, not all programs can yet take advantage of it. As well there are still lots of programs that are not yet coded to use more than one core of multicore processors. I believe that's the case with some of the filters still in use in Photoshop.
