Seriously Greg, I don't think it is fair that you get to live by that wonderful beach.
Great action picture as always.

WOW.

Great shot for action.

That wave looks like a crusher!

The man's body position and expression are really great.

Have any idea how deep the water is directly below him at that place? I mean how much depth directly below him?

I love being able to see, and read, the expression on his face. He knows what is about to happen.

Great picture.

Unfortunately for him, it is shallow

A rough guess would be 5-8 feet deep

Greg, I have really loved your waves series. Power, action, expressions. They all rock. Looks like this guy had a chance of hanging on. Did he?

Very nice. We shoot on the water a lot. What lens are you using?

@ RamcG: honestly, once the white wash envelopes them, I stop shooting and look for another victim...

@ bellissimogirl: on my 1D2: 135L w/ Sigma 1.4x @ f/4.0 between 1/2000 and 1/6400 (as the sky changes)

I don't get to shoot surfing since sadly- I don't live near the ocean, but I do get to shoot a lot of waterskiing, I also shoot a 1D2, but I usually use the 70-200 2.8 if I'm in the boat or I have a canon 400L 2.8 that I shoot from the shore. I might have to look at getting the 135. It might be perfect from the boat.

Sandy's. No place else has a shore break like that. Short and brutal and totally deceptive to the unfamiliar. Great shot.

EDIT: Were you there when Obama was there? I wished I could've caught that, or at least the look on the Secret Service people's faces when they saw him going into that shorebreak...

My experience with Sandy's is the wave you show here usually breaks in 1-3 feet of water. When the wave thickens up like that, there's a good chance its a shallow one. I imagine that poor local boy was spitting out sand after dabbling with Sandy's rules of "impact inertia" I fell prey to them myself a few times.

@ HawaiianOnline: I was working that morning and went there in the afternoon. If I had known...

@ PParker: You are probably right on my overestimation on the depth of the water. Needless to say, I stay dry

No worries Greg. I only wish I could be there with you to photograph the guys (and girls, by the way) in those great waves. Keep the good work coming. You're doing a great job. Every time you post one of these you bring back fond memories of my youth in Hawaii.

Uh, yeah mluckasavage. Have you ever seen boogey boarders only in the surf at Sandy's? Body surfing and boogey boarding both are common at Sandy's.
