p.1 #1 · A personal Thank You

I wanted to personally thank two great members of our FM community.
Ben Horne and Bart Carrig.
On Monday Nov 2nd I did the Subway hike in Zion. On the way out I was stuck half way up the hill to the trailhead, in the dark, out of water and no flashlight. Ben was kind enough to give me some Gatorade and help me walk off the hill and to the trailhead. During the hike out with Ben, Bart Carrig came back down to make sure I got off the trail ok. I just wanted to let them both know how thankful I am for there Assistance.
Sincerely
Kurt Rinne

Hey Kurt,

That is awesome to hear. There are some really great folks here. I haven't met Ben, but I am not surprised that he would help, and knowing Bart, definately he would come back down to help you.

The Subway is an incredible place, but the difficulty in hiking it does not totally get expressed, especially the hike back up that cliff at the end. I am sure your story is not alone in the amount of people who have issues getting back out. I am glad to hear you made it okay, and I look forward to seeing your photo's of this magical place.

Wow. They not only make photographs and provide advice in forums, but they also provide back-country search and rescue services! ;-)

Bart's our man. He scales walls like super hero as we all attested to on our trip with him a few years
back.

Yep, awesome people here on this site, including our moderator here Jim Fox Not only did he help me out of Death Valley, he followed me 150 miles to Lone Pine to make sure a gas leak in my truck was handled. Talk about assistance!

I've just returned from the trip out west; Dave (Icypeak) had shown me the post while I was out there, but I didn't have the opportunity to comment.

I am very thankful for the kind remarks, and of course I'm glad to help; but I really didn't do much -- just carried a flashlight back to about the rim and back; it was getting very dark, and even with the full moon it's a tough scurry through the brush and there are a couple of places there where you can get lost crossing the wash. But Kurt was in good shape, and I knew that Ben would be there with him (believe it or not, carrying his 8 x 10), so he was in good hands.

It was a pleasure to meet Ben and Kurt there; and it's the type of help I know anyone on the forum would provide.

As we left the trailhead, we did notice another pair with Colorado plates did not come up, so we made that report to the authorities, and I guess things worked out ok, as I heard no reports of harm to anyone. But one of those guys didn't even have a pack, and had no water, except for his friends. Egads !

I hope to post some nice pictures soon. We had come down from the top, and had quite an adventure coming through the extremely cold water via rappels and with all of our gear.

Thanks for the kind report, Kurt. I hope to see some of your images here.

I just got back from Zion, and found this thread while browsing to see what has been going on here while I was gone. I'm glad it worked out for the best with you, and that we were able to get you out of there. That's one heck of a place to be stranded with no headlamp, and a big dropoff just in front of you. I'm sure you would have done the same if the roles were reversed.

Yes, that climb out is not something you want to do in the dark - yikes! Kudos to all the efforts shown by Ben and Bart and the followup report to the rangers on the Colorado pair. Nothing but class.
