p.1 #1 · Canon CPS is okay

I recently purchased two used 1DMIIIs. Wanting to know if they had ever been sent to Canon for any kind of service I called CPS. I explained that I had just purchased these used and asked if by serial number they coud tell me anything about their history. They told me couldn't tell me anything by the serial numbers but the serial numbers did fall within the numbers that may have had problems. She suggested that I send them in for a complete checkup and repair if needed. She emailed me a prepaid UPS mailing label. They're on the way to Canon.
I thought that this was okay being that I purchased the used.
Now the waiting begins..

First, 2 1DMK3s! I am so jealous.

Second, Wow. That sounds like great service. If you don't mind me asking, what is your CPS level?

It is good service, but if what rep told you is true, I would be disapopinted. In fact, I am amazed they can't look up a camera by SN and tell you something about them. Even if they look it up and tell you that they have never been serviced by Canon. Or, were they saying they are not peritted to tell you?

As a CPS member you are permitted a number of free services (based on the level of CPS you have). Did they tell you on the phone that all costs would be covered by your CPS membership? If not, don't be surprised if they contact you about costs.

I agree CPS is great. I wasn't happy with a new lens. Called CPS and received a free shipping lable on Friday morning. Shipped it Friday afternoon, received it back on Tuesday noon, all adjusted and just like I expected it to be. Gold Level.

I've called Canon (not CPS) with a serial number for a body and they were able to tell me its repair history.

CPS may not have access to the information but I recently called Canon New Jersey service on a 1D3 I was selling and they emailed me a complete service history printout (by serial number) for me to provide to the buyer of the camera I was selling. Maybe they were in a good mood that day but service definitely has that information.

That is good to know. It is something they really need to offer considerig the uncertainty surrounding the 1D3.

Level of CPS
I have sent in numerous lenses and bodies and as a CPS memeber have never been charged. Never new there was a "level". All my invoices just say "No Charge-CPS".

Send in an original 1D with broken shutter and see if you still can get free service It's all depend on what you send in and for what reason.

And yes, there're three level CPS memberships, Silver/Gold/Platinum.

1) 16-35 Series 1- 8 years old
2) 20D 7 years old-shutter
3) Rebel Xt-at least 8 yrs old, shutter and mirror and IC
4) 400mm f5.6 at least 5 years old
any a few others.
Nowhere on ANY invoice does it state Gold, silver, platinum.

With that gear, you would not even qualify for CPS.

My CPS card has Silver printed on it. I imagine your CPS number indicates what level you are.

We're just joshing you around a bit

Over here in Europe, you need to have at least two "pro" bodies i.e. 10-50D/7D or better plus some fancy L-lenses to comply for CPS membership. We have no fees - yet
