Ooooo...painful.

By the look of the sand in the wave, it's a pretty shallow gnarly shorebreak. That guy is in for some bruises if he goes over the falls.

Remarquable impression of power. Well done.

PS : if that doesn't shock your surf culture, I'd stamp out the string...

Hi Francis, "the string" is the surfer's lifeline which connect him/her to their board so that they can get back on it when this kind of thing happens. It also means the body is easier to find if they don't resurface

While it may not be aesthetically pleasing it is an integral part of a surf shoot.

I guessed it was, Forrest. Still, do we always have to stick to reality ?

OUch is right.

Very good action shot.

Really captures the thrill, the risk, the POWER of that wave.

Wicked shot. Is this Sandy Beach on Oahu by any chance? Looks like a similar wave.

Aloha and thanks for the comments.

This is, in fact, Sandy Beach on the east shore of O'ahu Hawaii.

Funny thing is that it was pretty small that day. At Sandy's, you the occasional rogue wave that can pound you into oblivion.

I can attest to this. Fortunately for me, I was still young and my bones were still soft. Still hurt alot. haha.

I love that shot, it makes me wish I was there, except for the "landing-after-being-airborne- part".
Great shot.

I like the string, it makes me think, whats going to happen if that board starts rolling through the water. Great shot

Too funny! I just came back from Hawaii a few weeks back. I was there shooting a wedding. On one of the days off me and my brother went looking for a place to boogie board. Someone from the wedding party recommended Sandy beach. We arrived and got our gear on. We did not make it to the shore when the lifeguard approached us and asked if we were experienced. I said "no". He told us not to board there, citing the many injuries that happen at that beach. He recommended another beach about half an hour up the road. My brother, and second shooter, said he asked us to leave so we would not bother the locals. I told my brother that whether he wanted us to leave for the locals or the waves either way I was leaving. Good to see that we made the right choice.

p.s.
At that next beach I was stung by a Portuguese Man of War on the first wave I rode. lol

Francois brings up an interesting point, regarding getting rid of the string. For surfers and sporting-types, the string (and the escaping board) are natural parts of this image; however, for other uses, removing the string might be appropriate.

Heck, consider how this image would look without the string AND without the board. Totally different "feel," and although not natural, perhaps perfectly appropriate to create that different feel for a different application.

It's a great image as is, and I'm suggesting only that there might be another great image, for a totally different application, in this same scene.
