The cost of LED light panels seem to be pretty outrageous for what you get. Has anyone ever made their own light panel? I would think that one could make a 24" x 24" panel at a fraction of the cost of the ones currently out there.

I realized you would need high output LED, preferably with a 5500 degree color temp, but it seems a little patience, a soldering iron and a few parts can save you a bunch.

If you don't value your time, yes DIY might save some money. But, if you put any $$ value on your time, and if there's any R&D or learning curve involved, it's often better to buy off the shelf.

I'm with Chas-- the return on investment time-wise isn't there.

They also aren't bright enough to be very practical for most still photography uses compared to flash. They are used mostly for video.

I mounted my iPod Touch to my camera the other day.

Provided some interesting DIY lighting photos.

I'd like to try one as an under light for still life. Would be much more convenient than a piece of clear plex over a softbox.
