You know what's going to happen..

1) Camera is released to cries of "where can I get one? I just mortgaged my mother, but no stores have the camera in stock. Please help."

2) Followed by comments such as this is "the best ever" and "Wow, look at this tiny jpeg, isn't it fabulous"?

Then, a few months later, when people realize that they don't have a staff of 43 people to help with video production and processing (ala the shill video from Laforet where a full 1/3 of it was "credits") the reality will set in.

Then it's time for either

3) "Uh ohh..." or "Uhhhh gee, I guess it really is just a camera after all".

Reviews before number 3 occurs are probably not going to be accurate.

My favorite is #3 because then they show up in the B&S forums for those that need them, but have slightly smaller budgets :-D That's my plan anyway!

BTW, this camera has been officially announced. It is odd that there is no Master Thread for the 1D Mark IV. The previews that are out from the 1D Mark IV are nearly as through as the previews we had of the 7D, minus a lot of 'test' shots.

Yes, why no master thread for the 1Dmark IV? There was a thread about the 5D MarkII, and people were complaining about it, a year before Canon even announced it.

Maybe this time the Canon mobsters don't want any negative publicity... Maybe they visited FM HQ to make sure that doesn't happen

They are too busy whining about the 7D and have forgotten about the 1D IV. Maybe it's better we don't have a sticky, it'll just get bogged down in crap.

I heard about the black helicopters, but it's not just FM. They've been traveling the world like Santa Clause on Christmas, but actually more like the Grinch stealing information, pictures, and excitement.

Ummm...I would definitely pay them $5K for that.

Heck, I'd drop $5k if it could just fly on its own! No need to bother ducks all the time. Geese are more annoying any way, ducks deserve a break

I emailed Chuck Westfall at Canon this morning. His response is below.

Hi, David:

There is nothing unusual going on with the EOS-1D Mark IV. The camera was announced on 10/20, and initial shipments are scheduled to begin approximately 60 days later as per the press release. This interval between announcement and shipment is basically the same as most other EOS-1D class cameras. Canon is simply using this time to make final tweaks to the camera's firmware before it goes into mass production. The 1D Mark IV samples shown at PhotoPlus were working samples, but they are pre-production cameras with beta firmware that will never be sold to customers. That is the main

Hmmm... 10/20/2009 + 60 days = 12/19/2009?

I've had a couple on months break from FM - weather actually been good in the UK so I was out taking pictures. Went to Canon USA site to update DPP last night and saw the 1D4 specs for the first time. I went straight to FM, expecting a frenzy of threads and there were none.

I think that the lack of interest in th 1D4 is a combination of three things.

1 - Recession
2 - 1D3 problems
3 - 7D

People either cannot justify the cost, don't trust it yet or have gone along th 7D path.

Craig.

Actually, I think the real reason is simply that no-one has one yet & very few sample images are available. There was a flurry of interest when the specs were published but I think most people are waiting to gauge the camera's real-world performance. Not much point starting threads until there's something to fill them with (though, yes, I know, that hasn't always stopped us in the past )

I think Craig makes good points, but from my perspective, my only real interest in the Mk IV is my hope that it will push the III's and II's down in price. As much as I'd love to own one (a IV), it doesn't seem to be so much a Mark IV as it does a Mark III b. We'll see.

I think the biggest overall factor contributing to the silence is the Mark III AF issues still are fresh in everyone's minds, so the hush is a "wait-and-see" hush. Personally, I hope this camera kicks some serious butt.

In your mind what would qualify as a Mark IV? Let's see, the announced Mark IV has a totally new focus system, a new LCD, a new sensor, and two of the latest Digic chips. It also has HD video to include 24p. I'm sorry if this camera doesn't meet your criteria, but if you'd like to see an incremental upgrade look back to the 1DII vs 1DIIn or the 20D vs 30D. Oh yeah, those were the days when Canon was the DSLR leader.

Now, if it will produce quality images without ghosts or plaid patterns...

Yyyup. So according to David's email, it'll be another 40-odd days until we start seeing real world samples

I played with a friend's 500D today, and video quality is superb. Video is the dark horse of photography.
Or is it the elephant in the room?

I am sure it is one reason 5DMK2 sales are through the roof. I expect every Canon DSLR from here on out will have video capabilities.

regarding "meeting my criteria" I thought I said I'd love to own one. I'm not knocking this body at all... I just think that from a performance perspective, it isn't a huge leap ahead of the Mark III. The AF was necessary... do you really think they would ship a new body with "the same AF as the Mark III?" The sensor bumps up the MPs again... no shocker there and, in my world, no great gain. New chips? Yay! What's it doing except bringing the burst rate down slightly from 30 RAW to 28 RAW (yes, larger files).

From a functional standpoint, this is a Mark III with fixes and video added to bring it up to par with 2009 DSLRs.

That said, it still looks to me like a wonderful body, and I repeat, I hope this camera kicks serious butt both at retail level and in the field.

No doubt there... and I think it is one of two driving force items leading to this release. 1.) Video. 2.) Getting past the MkIII AF problem.

I'm also curious why there isn't a 1D4 master thread. It obviously is the best DSLR ever produced. It is a MASSIVE upgrade over the 1D3 (60% rez improvement, herculean AF and tracking improvement, ISO improvement, etc. etc.). And thank God it is 1.3x instead of a rez-and-reach-castrated or overpriced FF. Nothing deserves a master thread as much as the 1D4. Now, if we could just find some way to channel the FF-head whiners about the 1.3x into a whiners thread, then the rest of us 1.3x-philes could have a good-old-time.

That's not really a concern, since fast mode 6 CF cards will clear the buffer fast enough to obliterate those "rated" burst rate frame numbers. I'm eyeing either the new Lexar Professional 600x or the Sandisk Extreme Pro 90Mb/s for my December delight.
