How do most of you take the payment at Buy+ Sell for items. It says PayPal taken , I have signed up, but most instructions are for Ebay and not for a forum like this.. If I sell a lens or camera what would be my options for handling the transaction with paypal? I need some help...Thanks...Rich
If you sell a lens and want to receive payment, give the buyer the email you used when you signed up, that is basically your account number that the buyer plugs in when he's sending you money.
Seem pretty easy. What is the fee stucture and who pays the fee. It is 2.9%+.30 cents . So I add that to the price or absorb it. Is there a split fees option, or adjust the price to compensate?...Thanks...Rich
You need to mention in your post who's taking care of the fee. Some take it themselves. Some ask the buyer to pay it. Some say 50/50. It's up to you.
On paypal's end, the buyer sends whatever money the buyer sends. When it's received by the seller, the fee is deducted from the amount the buyer sent and the seller receives less than the full amount.
How am I protected from a buyer scam? The buyer must have a paypal account and he/she is tranfering the money to paypal? If they close the account does paypal come after me, or is there protection because of the fee?Once I sell it and the fee is paid, is the money mine ?

This is accurate unless the Personal option is used. With Personal, if the buyer pays out of existing Paypal funds or their bank account, there are no fees for either party. If the buyer uses Personal and pays with CC, then the buyer chooses who pays the fees at the time of payment.

There's somewhat of a grey area there. The way I understand it is Paypal acts like a store front. The buyer comes in, swipes their CC, debit card, or supplies checking account info, Paypal then puts a hold on the buyer's account for the amount requested immediately (within seconds), and then transfers the funds to your paypal account as soon as that hold is approved and placed. The funds are drawn from the buyer's account within a day or two. Then when you "withdraw" the funds and transfer it to your checking account, it normally takes 2-3 business days for it to show up into the checking account.
So basically, to me, the buyer would have to send money to you, then IMMEDIATELY, before the hold is placed, attempt to close their account. But it happens very fast. I had a situation once where I meant to draw funds from my credit card but instead it drew via my debit card from my bank account. RIGHT after I clicked "Send Money", I realized my mistake and immediately called paypal but they said there was nothing they could do, that the seller would have to refund me my payment in paypal. I then went right to my bank account online and there was already a hold for the funds on my account, like within a minute.
So yea, you'll be fine. If the buyer attempts to be a douche and tells his credit card company that he is disputing the charge, they can go after paypal but it stops there, paypal can't come after you because you'd have proof that you sent the item out.
Does using an invoice help the person on the other end (buyer)? Does that put things on paper so to speak as to fees etc.. it seems pretty much up front anyway, so are there no disputes without doing that. I noticed an option for the invoice. I think Ebay does that....

Correct, but its my understanding that "Personal" payments are not covered by the "protection" that PayPal offers to regular transactions so trying to avoid fees leaves you wide open to scamola.
I am looking to buy a 1DsMkII here and there is a $2,000 buyer protection through Paypal? What if the purchase is over that? Is the residual money lost, or does the initial purchase have to be below the $2,000 limit to qualify?
Does PP still have echeck available? If so, it takes longer for the transaction to process but there are no fees to speak of, great if you can get the seller to agree to it. Same protections if I recall, just takes somewhere in the 4 to7 day range to process and clear. An option worth looking into.

Correct as far as I can tell, best to only do this with someone you trust.
So as soon as the buyer puts the money in at Paypal They notify me? How do they do that , or where do I look? When the money is in the account , would the next day be ok to ship to the buyer safely?
Ok, thank you, but after the money is in the (my) account can I send the Buyer the item safely , secure knowing that the money is there. I want to ship as soon as possible safely....Rich
Rich,
Not sure how this is relevant to the Canon forum, but oh well...
As is always the case, you're best off buying from and selling to trusted FM members with demonstrated positive transactions. Generally, Paypal is used so that all parts of the transaction can be immediate. You agree to sell to a member, they PayPal you the funds, you ship. Everything happens as fast as is possible. If you're willing to take a slower route, you might as well ask for a personal check and then wait for it to clear, because slowing the transaction more or less eliminates the advantages of PayPal (in my opinion). I like to pay with PayPal because it's immediate and the buyer knows I'm serious about buying. I like to take payments through PayPal for the same reason--I know the buyer is committed to the purchase. And unless someone sends me an e-check, which I wait to clear because it's like a regular check, I ship immediately upon receiving payment through PayPal. Is it possible to get burned? I'm sure it is. Which is where we come back to the advice that you deal with respected and trustworthy FM members.
I have not been using PayPal at Buy+Sell and a lot of people have asked for me to. If I am going to use Buy+ Sell I want to make it as easy for the members here. I will ask these questions once and then I will be set. I have been a member on the forum for almost 5yrs. I trust people here that is why I want my dealings to be done correctly...Thanks ..Rich
Rich: I think you'll find that PayPal offers convenience, and that's why buyers are asking for you to use it. Same with being the buyer. I'm much less likely to consider a purchase if the seller doesn't accept PayPal because it's more of a hassle to write and mail a check (hard to believe, eh? ) or, egads! go out and get a cashier's check than to just go to the PayPal site, log in and send funds. Give it a try and before long you'll be wondering how and why you ever dealt without it.
