p.7 #1 · 5DMKII flaws, post pictures which were lost because of the camera

My experience has been the same as Jay's. For no particular reason the 5DmkII will throw a handful of cross hatched pattern on the file...ruining the file. Under exposure, and ISO do not seem to matter. I have never seen it in an over exposed shot. For me it has been three times in about 6 months. Only a handful two times, and one studio session where about 10% of the frames were ruined out of approximately 300 frames. I wonder if there isn't some electronic noise going on...because the pattern is quite often a a decreasing cascade both horizontally, and vertically. It is like the signal gets amplified on one photo site, and then it leaks to the next in a slightly less amplified state...by the edge of the frame the it looks still whacked, but less so. Maybe it is the nature of processing the new gap-less photo-sites, and new micro-lenses.

Yeah, it is the appearant randomness that is disturbing...

That makes it more like a message to Canon Inc. I understand this but I do not feel the need I have to listen to this message once a day here on the forum.

Did you not start this thread and ask for this message?

I remember a time when there were no AF on camera's and everyone did just fine. Maybe try taking all of your shots on MF for a week or two and then maybe you will appreciate your camera's focussing abilities a little bit more.

I also remember a time when the 10D was the cat's meow. John, do you still shoot with a 10D?

How about you just sell it and buy something else? 5D2s are still pretty hot.

Nice. These types of threads always resort to personal attacks when things get heated. There is a whole world out there outside this forum. Maybe some of you should discover it before it is too late.

+1

In fact, this very topic is quickly becoming notorious for this sort of thing. In a recent thread on this topic elsewhere someone who didn't like the fact that I can and do produce excellent prints from the 5D2 on regular basis that are unaffected by this "issue," began a series of replies by informing me that "I don't understand exposure" and so forth.

Ah, yes.

Any time that a forum poster catches himself/herself starting a reply with an insult to the previous poster, it is time to stop and ask whether this is the best approach. Sit and stare at the proposed post for a few minutes. Maybe show it to a friend. (Spouses are often helpful in this regard - rolled eyes will often let you know what your message looks like to others. ;-)

(I'll admit in advance that I've occasionally made this error and then regretted it - sometimes because I simply posted too quickly. On a few occasions I've later posted an apology in the thread.)

Chez, not sure if this can be said without being dog piled, but something I've noticed during my short stint with a camera. A lot of Nikon users tend to be more of the purist sort, with a passion for photography, these people are so easy to get along with. And a lot of Canon users tend to have alpha male syndrome, not as easy to get along with. You don't see as many cranky comments like the above over on the dark side.

Some of this reminds me of my history of shopping at Fry's Electronics. I hated that place when I was first starting with computers. I had all sort of problems, bad parts, trouble returning/exchanging items, very frustrating. As I became more familiar/experienced/educated, those problems seem to have disappeared.

This is so ridiculously anecdotal it hurts my head. You can't be serious with this.

It is funny to swap the brand names in your comment.

A lot of Canon users tend to be more of the purist sort, with a passion for photography, these people are so easy to get along with. And a lot of Nikon users tend to have alpha male syndrome, not as easy to get along with.

And, in the end, both generalizations are true, right? :-)

I see you feel like supporting my experience further. As absurd as it may seem to you, that's my experience. You can't change my experience, or change my perception of it. The only thing you can do is say that yours is different, and I have absolutely no issues with it. I was called an anti-semite for being annoyed that B&H was closed for all their holidays, so your reaction does absolutely nothing to make me question myself. The point I'm making to Chez, and not you, is to consider the source of the message.

Cheers.

I know Nikon and Canon (and other brand) shooters who are really great people and really great photographers - that's all I'm saying.

Take care,

Dan

I just took delivery of a 1D Mark III today. Oh. My. God. I thought I'd to some "underexposed ISO 100 shots". You can push 2, 3 stops whatever, and there is like ZERO noise. Who says the 5D2 is better than the 1D3 for noise?

Ah yes, back on topic, well done.

Please post some samples if you have the time. I've seen some great high iso from the 1d3, has there been a 1d3/1ds3/5d2/7d iso comparison in a single location yet? I don't imagine there's too many people who happen to have all these bodies at once, but you never know!

Hard to say for sure without knowing how much "push" we're talking about. But, overall ... and in general ... I'd say no problem.

In the shot below, the foreground (the side of the barn on the right) was very, very dark and near black for the most part. I pushed the shadow control in DPP then selectively brightened the area in Photoshop. Shot at ISO 400 w/24-105 f/4L.
