What you have here is flat light. When you want really creepy put the key light down low below the chin (e.g., coming out the top of the Jack o' Lantern on the ground).

That's the opposite of the normal, overhead orientation of lighting we are accustomed to seeing. By reversing the direction of the shadows vs what we expect to see it makes the face look weird.

i went for red fill from just above head height, the flash in the pumpkin was intended to have more of a shadow throwing bottom light

yeah I figured that out, but the net effect of that strategy isn't very scary looking.

Ever hold a flashlight under your chin when you were a kid? That's the scary look I was describing
