Before resorting to PW try making one of your 580exII the Master.

See this tutorial: LINK

The ST-E2 is the weak link in the Canon system because is underpowered and has limited range and its impossible to visualize what the range is because of the IR filter over its flash tube. The 580ex sends commands via visible pre-flashes from the main flash head. They are not usually noticed because everything occurs in the time between the shutter being fully pressed and the shutter opening.

With conventional PW you need one unit in the hot shoe and one for each flash. But your flashes will operate in M mode only and you will not be able to set power remotely. They turn a sophisticated flash into a dump flashing brick: functional in static situations but not very convenient or practical for dynamic ones compared to ETTL ratios.

The new PW system mimics Canon protocols and allows ETTL but requires learning a new interface. There have been some range issues.

A system called Radio Popper extend the range of Canon flash by converting the optical commands to radio then back to optical to drive the slaves. The advantage is full retention of the user interface and functionality of the flash.

Have you visited the PW web site? Go there any download the user manuals for the various products (PlusII, MultiMax, Flex TTL) and read them and all your questions will be answered. It comes down to the features you want and how much you want to spend.

PlusII is the basic 4 channel manual transceiver model.

MultiMax is a 32 channel manual transceiver with many added features you really don't need.

The Flex TTL is PW's implementation of remote ETTL ratio control. Personally I think its a bit of a kludge, but read the manual and decide for yourself

I have the following flashes: 580exII, 580ex & 2 550ex flashes and a ST-E2 controller. I use them with 4 TT5 Flex PWs. I haven't had any problems with them so far. Once I get everything setup and do the test pops they work great.

hey Michael, what did you use to get your PW's to work with your 580ex? they don't come with PC inputs. I think there are converter hotshoes that do contain the pc input? (haha I found this out the hard way. Ordered 3 PW's and 2 PC1 cables, only to realize I can't stick them into my 580EX's...only the 580II's have the PC input =(
