p.1 #1 · m4/3 cameras & Nikon lenses

Hi everyone,

I am about to receive an adapter (from jinfinance on eBay) to mount my Nikon primes on my GF1. I figured for $70, it would be great to use my Nikon primes (35/2, 85/1.4). My only m4/3 lens is the Panny 20/1.7 - I might pick up a zoom or two later on, but right now, I want to experiment with primes on this camera.

I was wondering if anyone out there has been using Nikon primes on their m4/3 camera? If so, what lenses are you using and what do you think of the resulting IQ?

Thanks!

I've used a few, using a F-4/3rds adapter stacked on an MA1 4/3rds-m43 adapter on a G1.

The 20/2.8 AF is an acceptable performer but quite hard to focus due to the poor ring, the AI-S version does better.

The 24/2.8 AF does quite well, but the poor focusing ring is an issue.

The 35/1.4 is good from f2.8 on, but has serious purple fringing at wider apertures.

The 50/2 AI does extremely well, sharp at all apertures, very sharp from f2.8 on.
The 50/1.8 Series E also does quite well and is quite compact.

The 135/2.8 AI is sharp from wide open and very compact. A good tele option for lots of reach.

That said, the two F mount primes I use the most on my G1 are the CV 40/2 Ultron and CV 58/1.4 Nokton.

Here my 105mm F/2 at F/2, iso200 on my E-P1:

It's like a poor man's 200mm f/2 VR. BTW: I got the same adapter as you from ebay.

I've had success with the ZF35 f2 and Nikon 50mm f1.8 D on a Panasonic G1. Both were a lot of fun and yielded good results. I'm using the Voigtlander branded adapter from Cameraquest.

My question is this -- does anyone know of an adapter that incorporates an aperture step-down ring so we can use G lenses on m4/3?

Novoflex makes such an adapter. Not exactly cheap, though. See here:

You can shim the aperture open by putting a sliver of plastic or similar in the slot. I've shot wide open with G lenses on my E-P1 that way.

I wish they'd make an EF/EF-S adapter with integrated aperture control ring.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

I just received the jinfinance adapter... I was surprised to see how well made it is. It is, however, a little bigger than I thought it would be, but nothing I cannot live with.

I am trying to use MF focus assist with my Nikon lenses mounted to my GF1... and I cannot seem to get it to work (it works with the Panny 20/1.7 in MF mode)... is it possible to do this with the adapter and Nikon lenses?

Roel,

I find it awkward as all heck to do this, but this thread explains how to do it on the G1, which I assume has the same interface as the GF-1: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/820939.

It'd be nice if this function could be made more accessible. I hate the interface on the GH-1 (which I assume is similar).

Hey Terry,

Thanks for that. I appreciate it. It is awkward (especially with my 85/1.4... yikes, talk about camera shake), but it does work well. Hope you are enjoying your 7-14mm...

I thought I would update this thread... I picked up (from eBay) a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 Series E lens. I am very impressed by its small size, but I am even more impressed with the IQ on my GF1. The next couple of shots aren't anything special, just the first two shots with this lens, the adapter from jinfinance and my GF1. Both shots taken wide open, RAW processed in LR 2.5, no adjustments.

For a $50 (or so) lens, not bad...
