Photo Forums...The Gladiators

I have had the opportunity of being present to witness the activities on several photo forums over the past few years and it has been a revelation to say the least.
A photo forum is a place where those interested in "Photography" gather to discuss topics related to photography.

Hmmm...Well let me be quite frank. For all intent and purpose (and this is a generality) the photo forums are more akin to fans cheering for their favorite teams. The frenzy is often similar to those watching a heated football match between two arch rivals, with a packed stadium of fans frothing at the mouth screaming, we will "Kill You". We are the Best!!!

The classic argument on most of the generalist photo forums is that of the "we are the best and your team sucks". Now what I find really curious, is that in many cases, I could quite easily take an identical image stick a different brand name on that image and those who are on the team of that image will find some very good reasons why that image is better than the identical image with a different brand name on it.

Why do I know this. Because I have done just that. Not only did I do this but I did so confronting a "Professional".

I had a hell of a good time. I presented certain images that were shot with one brand and called it another brand and visa versa. Well wouldn't you know it? I knew within five minutes where his bias was and how to play with it. Was one of the most amusing moments I have ever had with a "Professional". Now this pro was not really a photographer, but a professional critic of camera equipment. In fact this person reminded me of another professional that I was had the unpleasant experience of communicating with on another forum. Of course, I am no longer welcome on "That" forum. But, knowing what I know now, it wasn't really an issue as what that individual had on offer was utterly irrelevant.

It is also quite interesting to note, that those who are actually working at and loving their craft are the ones that rarely get in to heated arguments regarding the "Which Brand is Better" scenario. Why? Because they have other more important things to do. They are content with using their tool to express themselves and are content with the gear they have chosen. They also know a very special secret. Hanging a 30,000€ Blad around your neck will not guarantee that your images will look like a 30,000€ image.

I like photographers who talk about photography. I like artists who talk about their art. I like Chefs who speak passionately about cuisine and I love people who do what they love.

Well said, and I pretty much agree with your assessment. There are many very useful messages that would also back up that assessment, and all to many that prove that some think you can buy skill, and which brand of gear it comes with as a bonus hiding somewhere inside the box. Luckily it doesn't take all that long to learn which members are trying to help, educate & provide valuable advice.
When I first joined this particular forum I had to but heads with a group of "L's or nothing" photographers who were riding the back of a 14 year old who simply asked if the Sigma 70-300 APO DG was a decent lens upgrade for his kit, which only included the kit lens on a Rebel. About 4 or 5 members in a row told him he'd be wasting his money if he didn't wait & buy a 100-400 L. I really didn't like their attitude & said so, which prompted a few others to join in to support me. Trying to discourage anyone in that way was unacceptable, let alone someone with a very limited budget due to age.

I will worry about which camera to use when I am better than my 5D - but don't hold your breath.

Without wishing to be provocative (but it is ) I have recently been looking at/reading two books with images from Vogue and from Normal Parkinson. Quite frankly in terms of technical quality many could have been shot with an 18-55 kit lens - but they are still great images.

I feel this happens in the Sports and Wedding forums here. When the 5D( for weddings) came out and certain good shooters were getting the premium lenses, the prevailing thought is to have ONLY that camera with your 24/50/85/135/200L series lens as the ONLY way to be a premium shooter. Own a Canon 50 1.8, makes one a weak shooter.

As for the tip to the kid, I feel one would be wasting money if he bought a 100-400L as if he is doing family pictures, the sigma will do fine.

In sports, seems certain posters receive the most posts even if its a mundane series. I just do not understand the clique system in here!

Generally speaking, exactly! There seems to be sense of deep satisfaction by those who own the same expensive equipment as the guys who post test samples hopefully proving you were right to blow the next installment for the family car for that new L. Online CSI style forensics by the unofficial testers will prove that an L snapshot, void of creativity or content, enlarged to 300% will not only validate your purchase, but, if pressed, can also be used as an alternative eye-chart. It's even possible that someone might test compare enlargements from a security camera stationed at the end of a food aisle to show that your faithful, but bokeh(less), purple-fringing, third-party f3.5-f6.5 zoom really sucks. Oh, the horror.

Nobody in their right mind wants a underachieving lens on FM. You need to take action to find out the truth. The truth is discovered two ways: survey style, or with a versus post, although sometimes both can nail it for some. Thus based on a 14-12 consensus from some guys who are professional amateurs, you decide to get, say, a used 5D to compete with the big guns. As technology evolves (the next day) you begin to discover posts by pros and what nots who use equipment that you think will definitely trump yours. You've seen the blowups. Case closed. OK, so you post somewhere a few times "the 5DII is my next camera" just to put people on warning. It's an official declaration to all who might read that you aren't some slouch with just a 5D "classic"... you are going to buy something better, at some point... you hope. It should end there, but unfortunately a new FF camera is not enough, or some say. Enter the Alternative Gear Forum. There, you will discover the mystique of the marrying old German lenses to Japanese DSLRs via adaptors you have to track down on eBay. Once assembled, they are tested, and retested, compared, and maybe micro-adjusted.... it depends on how much time you have on breaks. If all approve of your findings you can declare yourself "king of the world", or at least think it. Ordinary L lenses? Are you kidding? Your next AG post: "I've got a Leica R with a born-on date of 1975 and a rare upside-down serial number, some say only two were made, that will blow your freakin Ls off the planet. Just asking, but is there something better?"

On FM it is always good to remember that if you are too proud of your 1DsIII someone is bound to announce that his $23K Leica S2 in on preorder.
