Currently I have D90, Nikon 35 1.8 AFS, Sigma 70-200 2.8, and Tamron 90mm macro lenses. I'm planning to go to Bali next month and been thinking of getting tokina 12-24.
I'll be shooting family pictures and the island surrounding, etc. Do you think I need the WA lens?

Yes, get the wide angle. I find that sometimes the 35mm 1.8 DX is just not wide enough, so if you get the WA lens you'll have a nice kit from wide angle to telephoto. If you get the Tokina get the older version because it cost about $100 less then the newer version with the built in motor (which the D90 does not need).

Based on what you have listed I would look at the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8. I think that range would be more useful. But go to a local camera store and try both a 12-24 and a 17-50 on your D90. This will give you a better feel for the focal lengths you may prefer on the wide end.

Newer version is sharper and less flare and CA prone though from what has been reviewed.

Yes you need wide angle, for landscapes and inside temple complexes.

You could go for the Nikon 16-85, an ideal FL while traveling.

I disagree on the 17-50 but do agree on trying both. It really comes down to whether you have a problem with changing lenses more often. The 17-50 overlaps on the 35mm f1.8 - longer than that he can use the tamron or the sigma, shorter than 35mm the 17mm works. the 12-24 + the 50 f1.8 would give him a wider range with less overlap.

Thanks for the responses. I'll check 12-24 and 17-50.

Also remember to check the 16-85, because it's a great lens and you might really like it.

12-24 abd the 16-85 would make an excellent combo to round out your kit.

Before you make any decision, I suggest you to review the photos took by the these WA lens , download their original size and review.

and you can consider the other wide angle lenses, they are also good, and more wide.

I can tell you that it is a very good idea to have wide angle, at least ~25mm 35mm equivalent focal length. I had a 17-50 Tamron 2.8 on my d90 when I went to Israel and the wide proved invaluable. in fact it was the only lens I shot with except for a few night shots with a 50 f/1.8. Get something wide, you won't regret it.
