Closed the gap, coasted alongside, and then raced ahead.
Elaborate, please? Canon's offerings are in a different niche than Nikon's but are no less good. Nikon has a compact full frame pro-AF camera, and Canon doesn't. But Canon has a high resolution compact full frame camera, and Nikon doesn't. Both have excellent high MP pro level bodies, and both have great sports bodies. Nikon's sports body is full frame, but lower in resolution, especially when considering cropping ability, while Canon's is 1.3x, but with much higher pixel density for greater detail at a distance and with shorter lenses. Frankly, for sports and PJ, I'd rather have Canon's approach.
The 7D is every bit as good, and IMO a bit better than the D300s. So where, exactly, is this 'racing' ahead?
Lol, on all Canon forums, the instant you put in a comment that goes against the grain, people get their back up. I suppose that's true for everything in life - not many people are impartial.
The D3 is the king of low light. If you argue otherwise, you're wrong. Full stop.
Now if you want to compare unreleased cameras, let's look at the D3s ISO 102k vs the Mk IVs.
The samples are out there.
i used to have a spec monkey riding on my back .. i used to read all the spec of every maker .. and decided go to Nikon! after using it for a few months, i've realized that its not what it can do on paper, its more of which camera is most comfortable to use and easier to maneuver its menus ..
If you are happy with the 1.3 crop, then I would say the Canon has the edge, however they are very similar overall and both excellent cameras. I expect high ISO and AF performance to be similar.
It also comes down to lenses, Nikon has the fantastic 14-24, Canon's lacklustre 16-35 is reduced to 21 to 45 on the cropped sensor. Canon really needed to launch a 14-24 rival with the 1Dmk4 if they wanted to keep the wide angle/full frame crowd happy.
When Nikon comes out with a body that can accept all my EF lenses, I think this sort of comparison will make sense. Until then, I'll keep on shooting Canon bodies and lenses.
Sometimes I wish I didn't have all this money invested in glass and could just switch willy-nilly to whatever camera is best at the time. But, such luxuries escape me.
I was amazed when I saw the D3S pictures. Super clean! D3S + 14-24/2.8 = love for me. Except that I've got so many Canon lenses that it would cost mucho dinero to switch. Damn .

Adam you are totally wrong, everybody knows the Canon 50D is the king of low light not the Nikon D3. The 50D is 3 stops cleaner than the D3. Not sure about the D3s but I estimate the Canon 50D is only 2.67 stops cleaner than the D3s because admittedly Nikon have made a small improvement (0.33 is better than nothing), mostly through stronger noise reduction in JPG...which Pros use (only amateur pixel peepers who can't expose for shite use RAW)

Canon still makes better lenses(overall) than Nikon....flame me I dare ya....
I don't agree with that... I don't think there's a big difference in lens quality; both are excellent. However Nikon lenses are famously expensive, so Canons are much better value for money IMHO.
There is also the issue.... of my 200/1.8 or 35L, neither of which exist in Nikon form
you're right Adam L,bacause D3S not only that has a larger area sensor, but also has a smaller number of pixels, this is 5,7ym2 vs 8,5ym2-Nikon D3S it has the biggest pixel pitch from all current Dslrs. So is normal to be th king of ISO!
