just picked up a 400mm 3.5, lets see what you guys got. anything manual focus and above 200mm post here, i know 85mm's qualify as telephoto but i'm looking for the longer stuff....
Not counting 210mm, I only have two MF lenses over 200mm. The RMC Tokina 400/5.6, which is a so-so lens that only gets sharp at f/11, and the Tokina AT-X 100-300/4, which is quite a good lens except for the flimsy tripod collar. Here's a shot + crop with it at 300mm & f/5.6. This is a juvenile heron that happened to land on my neighbor's roof, taken handheld at 1/200 under an overcast sky. I'm sure the result would improve a bit with better light, but this is really pretty good already.
Received my 300mm 4.5 IF-ED AIS lens this week and took a couple of shots in the yard for a quick test. This one turned out the best, I think (need to work on manual focusing technique ) :
I have a small problem viewing the pictures: they look completely washed out in my browser (very low contrast). If I right-click them and save them to my computer they appear correctly in any tool of my choice. This does not happen with other pics on this site... any explanation
D700 and AI-S 600 5.6
All handheld
I've rented a 600f4Vr and compared the two. The newer version has a slightly better IQ and better in lower light, but I only paid $1500 for the AI-S
