I guess I missed that... I would imagine Canon will release a FW update to deal with whatever issues have come up since production started. However they do take their own time in releasing them...

Hi everyone.

...had to register to support all of the 7D owners with focus problems. I feel your pain.

Shot about 3k images through various lenses, using mostly the 24-70L. Maybe 10% razor sharp, 20% acceptably sharp for smaller prints, and the rest just plain awful to be honest. Absolutely unacceptable performance from my unit's AF. About the only thing I can do consistently with this body is to set the lens at infinity before shooting, activate AF, and *maybe* get a sharp image. This is with single shot, center spot, good light and contrast. Shot a chart and tried MA which did nothing.

I reset all settings and pulled both batteries which did not help. So today, after nearly two weeks of ownership, I finally decided to exchange my body. What really stinks is that its probably going to take a while seeing as these cameras are back ordered all over the place. =[

The shop I purchased from was great. They told me I was the first customer to return a 7D and complain about the focus. And promptly added me to the top of the waiting list for my exchange. So I guess my manual focusing skills will be improved over the next 3 months while waiting for another shipment...

The thing is, this truly is a great camera. I absolutely love the feel, which was my biggest concern switching from Nikon. Took me no time to pick up the controls, which IMHO are brilliant. Build quality is excellent... and it is capable of producing outstanding IQ, IF you weren't one of the unlucky 1% to get a lemon.

I hope to get this resolved soon so I can spend more time taking pictures and less time fooling around with gear. Fall is one of the few good things about Upstate NY and it probably wont last too much longer.

Good luck to everyone.

My 7D is now in the mail back to Canon for "calibration" or whatever it takes. I gave it one more weekend of testing and still couldn't get consistent good results. I'm hoping all it needs is a minor tweak. I specified in the paperwork that I really wanted to get it fixed the first time as opposed to having to keep sending it back like I had to do with my 40D which still hasn't been truly fixed. and it will be going back for the 3rd time for the same issue whenever I get the 7D back and it works.

I know really it's all my fault, when I bought 7D it was just to much a camera for my untalented hands, that my poor photography skills were laid open for all the world to see is a shame I cannot bear. There is no such thing as a bad camera just a bad camera operator. For surely the autofocus issues are nothing more than my weak eyes and twitchy fingers... Shame on me for blaming Canon for my inadequacy and depriving myself of the camera by shipping it off to Canon Repair and harassing those poor techs who obviously were only hired to appease photo hypochondriacs like me who think it just might be the camera...

Think that will shut the Canon fanboys up?

Good luck. I hope it goes well and I will watch your progress keenly. I was at the cottage for the last 3 days so I missed a lot and I'm trying to catch up. What problems were you having?

I wound up sending mine back for an exchange. I'm hopeful the next one is better. I don't want to send it to Canon. Being from Canada and not being a pro it's 4 to 6 weeks. I did send my 70-200 (I dropped it) to New Jersey but it was brutal trying to get it back.

I do say your bad luck is amazing. 3 times sending in a 40D and immediately a bad 7D. I wonder when consumer groups will step to court.

Will your hyperbole it convince people the 7D is a bad camera? Or that Canon is a bad company? Well, what do you think?

As I said before, I fail to understand why you have to convince others of your woes. Does it help to go into hyperbole to ridicule others? Because a post like this, do you expect positive reactions? It ranks under the old monster under a bridge category.

So true or not, people will dismiss your post and quite frankly, rightly so. Monsters under a bridge aren't good for a forum.

Not really bad luck. The 40D has a something wrong with the viewfinder, looks like looking through a funhouse mirror.. move your eye a little bit and it distorts. Other than that the camera works fine. However Canon repair hasn't for some reason been able to fix the viewfinder thing and this will be the 3rd time I'll be sending back. Annoying but nothing against the 40D line. Likewise my 20D has only had one problem since I bought it. The shutter finally died in due course. They fixed it and it's still my backup of choice.

From what I've seen of pics the from others posts the 7D rocks, I can't wait to get mine working right. The 7D is not a "bad camera" overall from what I can tell. But I think there are a few like mine that slipped through Quality Control. And as subtle as the AF issue is I can almost see how.. almost.
In my opininion the ridicule of the Canon Fanboys who pounced all over the boards when anyone dared say they might have a bad copy of the camera is fair game to make fun of. A little tongue in cheek at their expense. It amuses me. Deal with it.

With that much bad luck, you should stay inside during thunderstorms, double stroke that mojo bag and get a Pentecostal preacher man to bind and cast out those evil spirits. I've owned dozens of EOS cameras and 40 or 50 lenses since 1990 and only 3 items actually actually needed service: LCD faded in an EOS 1N in 1996, the command dial broke in an EOS 5 in 1999 and the AF motor went tits up in a 75-300 IS lens in 2000. All were under warranty and were fixed. I thought Canon QC was walking on water as I have yet to have a failure since, and I've owned the 10D, 20D, 40D, 50D, 5D, 5DII, 7D and XTi, as well as a cupboard of L optics. Hell my car never breaks and my wife doesn't age... Canon is friggen amazing!

Canon fanboys aren't the problem with this thread - it's whiny, self-important, impossibly "unlucky" trolls that stick in people's craws...

No Keith, its people like you that get their panties in a wad when people want to show they are pissed about a camera that doesnt work. The fanboys liek yourself must chime in a defend their honor. If users have faulty cameras and wnat to show their displeasure, let them.

Why do you feel the need to jump in a defend Canon. Let people say their piece.
If you want to start a thread were people can go say nothing but great things about the 7D, then start one. Start a "My 7D is is awesome, is yours?" thread.

I dont know why it bothers people like you when people want to show their anger after spending so much money on a camera. Its not trolling. Its "I'm not happy with my 7D after spending $1700" Believe me, they are not baiting people like you to come and argue with them over their bad camera. If anything, its trolling on the fanboys part. Looking for anyone that may possibly say something bad, then attack.

I have no idea, either. And I don't read Nikon forums to know what's going on there, either.

But then that's not the point, really.

It is my contention that "most folk" never shoot their cameras in a manner that will reveal focus issues. The DOF of the shots from "most folk" covers up many sins.

Heh, by my count 3 fanboys had to jump on my post like rabid.. well fanboys. Missing the point of what I said, distorting the message, misusing the label of "troll" and ultimately resorting to personal insults, like "whiny, self important". Thanks guys for proving my point.

And for the record I don't consider myself unlucky with Canons. For instance I've never had a problem with any of my lenses. Nor other bodies I've used. I mentioned the ones I've had issues with because it's relevant to my experiences with their service dept.

So true. My favorite fan boy post of all time was about the Mark III, when someone pronounced the Mark III as not having any focus issues and, to "prove" it, showed a sequence of a pickup going down the street in front of his house and -- I kid you not -- a tight shot of his thumb on a hot day.

Just like this crowd:

This is absolutely correct. I have seen over and over again where some one will attack and say mine is fine and then proceed to post a sequence of 10 AI Servo shots at f8. Well yeah, my 1D3 is the best in the business at f8. Its 100%. But where it dissappoints is using that same camera and test using f2.8. Then we start the trash bin excercise.

Mine is fine at 2.8 - use it at 2.8 always, and on 300mm. Dave, if your focus is moving around then I urge you to send it in in one last hope that they can fix it. I think it's worth a try, and it won't cost you anything. They have been able to fully fix quite a few cameras. A lot of them post in the N&W forum all the time.

I don't think you were here on FM when I posted a 16 shot burst at 2.8 of an RC jet, but the special Canon service techs they brought into the Virginia center really knew what they were doing.

FWIW, I returned the problem body today... had the opportunity to get a kit for the same price as the body at Worst Buy w/ a 10% off coupon. The serial on the new body was 5k+ newer than my last, which was just over 10000. From what I can tell, this body is spot on, although I haven't had a chance to test much more than one shot/single point focus. It was immediately obvious... tested a little in low light/contrast and was quite pleased with the results. Took maybe 60 shots at various focal length and subject distance and the AF nailed the focus.

Servo will be tested soon.

I'm very grateful that this is working out as this body is just about perfect for me... love it.

Anyone have any interest in a 28-135 3.5/5.6 IS ?
