From what I can find it looks fine, I`ll shoot a couple in the morning wide open

No need to go to any trouble.. was more just interested in your impressions (smooth, 'buttery', busy, etc, etc).

In the UK the terminology would be: bokeh like the green butter from Ireland

It's a pretty amazing lens, my favorite in the 85mm-105mm range.
You can see my lens test here: http://forum.manualfocus.org/viewtopic.php?id=11431

They sometimes surface fairly cheap over here in Sweden, there is one available for around $160 over here in very fine condition. I don't know if it is a good deal compared to what they have on offer overseas.

It is one of the few lenses in the Contax range that I haven't used. The one I ordered turned out to have a scratch on the front element so I sent it back straight away.

Dave - how do you find the bokeh?

I find it OK, I`m not usually a wide open shooter but here are three shots( just j pegs and no processing other than levels and hand held) the first one is wide open. hope it helps.

Dave, looks like a nice bokeh, in my book.

BTW: The edge of the grass looks good too, could you show a 100%-crop of the OOF (right of the pole, vertical lines of yellow grass) and the grass in Focus, at the corner, please?

2 images wide open and then 2 images stopped down 100% crops. don`t forget these are hand held and dirty and are the j pegs I shoot with the raws. I only process raw images usually but can try to upload a raw somewhere for you to download later today if needed. I think I might have some 5d2 images somewhere.

Just put another three images up that shows the corners better without wind.

Thanks a lot, Dave

that looks very fine, definatly that sonnar °touch and feel°.
Bokeh - that's already visible - is fine; smother than the Canon 100 macro's and similar to the 2.8 Sonnar 85.

I can't wait the 100/3.5 to arrive; and might test again these two, if enough time.

okay, it's been a while
that lens renders the tones and colors really nice; it's better than the CYZ Sonnar 85 in terms of corner sharpness (you could expect that from the MTFs already) and CA.
It resolves similar as the Canon 100 macro, which is one of the best Canons - but has nicer bookeh.

It's dfficult to find some example - so I uploaded a RAW-file, the Sonnar 100/3.5 on the 1 DS-2, get it here

That advice goes for any Zeiss C/Y lens at that price except the 135/2.8 or 50/1.7

That brickwork says it all.Look at that fly/spider on the left hand window frame.I love mine, I have a happypage AF confirm V5 with micro adjust adapter and focus is more or less spot on now with the beep/light. It has to be one of the most underated lenses of all time and I`m over the moon that you got a decent copy. The images just have something a bit special about them and the price doesn`t break the bank either. I don`t know what hood you are going to use but I managed to get hold of the original, it`s a bit bulky ( no change there then for Contax) but because it`s a fair size it makes the lens sit just nicely in your left hand for balance. My Canon 100 2.8 macro is good but not quite as good as this little gem.

Good luck

Dave

David, it's a spider ;-)

yes, it' s nice a litte gem, with 280 gramms of weight and 60 mm of lenghts, which allows to have it in the bag all the time. My copy is a AE-version, already made in Japan, no differences seems to be between AE and MM. I havent found a shade yet, so at the beginning, I might use my standart 55 mm-shade... which might help at the lens border.
I tested more backlit-scens and flares weren't a big problem.

Actually, that's the first lens I bought whithout having seen any image taken with it - so I believed in Zeiss, Sonnar, David and what I heard about Ffordes

I'm glad about it.... right now calibrating its NNP for the panohead.
Pano's taken with that lens, go figure.

Thanks again David
who jumped for the MM-version? that's been away fast after Davids first post

From what I've learnt from this forum, the CV 90/3.5 APO definitely is not like Zeiss. It has excellent sharpness, very smooth bokeh and good CA control, but not the T* colors and Zeiss microcontrast. I'm still interested in it but haven't found a lower price than 469 euros for it yet...

I'd also like to see more images from the C/Y 100/3.5 and also of the 85/2.8 for that matter.

100/3.5 is a nice lens and has better corner sharpness than the 85/2.8 and 135/2.8. Bokeh isn't as nice as the 2.8 lenses and for that reason alone I prefer either of those over the 100/3.5. It's not bad by any means but it lacks the pop of the 2.8s wide open. If my friend still had one I could have ran a comparison but he got rid of it once he got the 100/2.

I've owned both the Zeiss 85mm f.28 and the 135mm f2.8, their really is no comparison between those two and the Zeiss 100mm f3.5, it's head and shoulders better. One of the few lenses that I've used where there is very little difference in resolution shooting wide open at f3.5 and stopped down.

Sure it's a bit slow, but having used great lenses like the Leica 90mm f2.8 Elmarit 2nd ver and Nikon 105mm f2.5 AIS, you had to stop them down one stop or more to perform, which makes the Sonnars f3.5 speed a non-issue for me (while being a better performer than the Elmarit or the Nikon).

Only thing to watch out with the 100mm f3.5 is it's high contrast, can be a blessing or a challenge.

Some examples, XSi body, Zeiss 100mm f3.5 Sonnar Contax mount

Qwerty64,

how does the 100/3.5 Sonnar behave with regard do CA? I've owned the 90/2.8 Elmarit II before, and it had very low CA compared to the 135/2.8 Sonnar for example.
