Hoffer and Sam are just being modest. They ripped off every pose they use from Todd Reeves.

talking about the todd reeves incident. what's up with thieves who then try to sue when someone catches them? at what point do these people stop being utter sleazeballs?

i honestly hate that crap. i know i was laughing at that whole big thread over the toronto junk photographer who was stealing a guys work also, but that guy found the thread and actually got his lawyers involved, which caused the locking of an epic thread.

my question is why? i don't understand greed at that level, at all.

Poses and wedding trends are like any other cultural thing - there are fads. If some really wonderful Hoffer-type photographer creates a new concept, it doesn't take long before half the consumers in the world want the same shot for their wedding album, engagement session, senior pics, etc. This is even more common in the age of FB, Flickr and all the other sites. But it has been happening for many, many decades.

I'm not a pro, not 'Starting to want to start to want' to do weddings or anything, so I guess I am one of the 'fans' here. But even if I tried to mimic a Hoffer shot or one of the other stars here, I know for sure it wouldn't look the same, or anywhere close!

I appreciate very much what I learn from all of you, and I hope by commenting on your shots now and then, I give back just a little of what I get from being here.

shooting the exact same image in the exact same spot and attempting to match the exact same processing and exact same framing for display online a week after someone else does it is shady and lazy.

being inspired by others' work and recreating poses and concepts is a natural evolution of the art - but the example tony has given goes beyond "inspiration" - as does flat out copying his logo and visual identity.

Well put - you did a good job of pointing out the difference between being inspired and plagiarizing.

Funniest thing is, neither Sam nor Tony invented that idea... I saw it years ago on a BIG time rockstar's page... there's rarely anything truly new under the sun.

I just try to do MY personal best with MY clients everytime. If it's a rehash, it's a rehash...

U serious?!?! So it was planned copying no less! Ha ha ha!

C'mon so you people go out on an e-shoot... you see a wall that has a convenient sitting spot on top... think "this would be such a cool place to take a shot like the one Tony did .... let me call him on the phone and see if it's ok if I do it too?"

Too funny.

I have to say that the shot you posted (with the dude that was forgiven) somehow feels like pushing it to me too... but FWIW I wouldn't think much of recreating the shot that You created and that Sam asked for permission about. If I posted it here, I'd probably give you props and I would probably tell the couple that I'm drawing inspi...stealing from a kicka$$ photographer they should have hired instead of me (I actually HAVE said that to clients... and they loved it ).

I'll even shamelessly admit that I created my own version of a Lookbook with supertiny captures of photos I've liked here and elsewhere.... only actually used it once, but it feels good to have "backup" in the bag.

The gerneral rule is, if you've shared coffee cups for drinking or office floors for sleeping, copying is okay. The rest have to pay. PAY!

Well Sam's become a close personal friend of mine. We talk a few times per week, so him texting me to make an ethnic slur, tell me I suck, or that he's using an idea is quite normal.

This is funny... every few minutes someone's avatar goes "broken link" ... and then they resurface with a Tony-inspired logo. Waiting to see what Sergio's is going to look like.

Watch him revert to his normal self just to make me look like an idiot

Sergio. I would copy your photos because I often think they're cool... but we don't havea any nice bums down here, they all evil!

Evan, you're right. Half the time you don't even get the colors right... like those "vintage" black and white photos. Confess... it's just 'cause you just suck at WB!

I think the important thing here is who does something BEST and not FIRST. In reality, we don't know everyone in this world and we don't know everything going on in this world. We also don't know everything that had been done in the past. So, we cannot really say who do what first, we cannot be sure if we are even doing something original to begin with. The idea of sharing what you have done, eg photos, is to show what you have done, and hopefully someone can give you feedback and you can improve on it.

Yup,

You can call it shameless, lazy, etc. And you prolly would be right.

To me was more of "can I pull it off" along with the bad advice given to me. Even tho' I'm a FM member since 03 I've been away since (I was looking for reviews for a point & shoot at that time). I'm new to photography (just bought my first DSLR last year, there! I said it... I'm a noob but boy am I putting in the hours and burning the midnight oil to fix that).

So, the answer was "no" I was unable to pull it off. Even with the blatant similarity it took waaaaay too much time on post processing to get it "kind of right" and still fail. On the other hand I did learn a lot.

It taught me to see where I stand (far... very far behind the top dogs, but that's obvious to y'all). I also taught me not to EVER post shots in public that I need and will take in order to better myself, measure myself and learn from others.

Unfortunately I'm of the "learn by doing" type. I can't handle theory, inverse square law, etc. I need/have to take the shot in order to truly understand what it takes.... that's just the way things are for me.

Now, I won't sacrifice my first born for forgiveness....I think I've done plenty of that. So, complain, idolize and post as you wish. While you are doing that I'm going back to take the shot I need to take in order to learn and I won't apologize for that. I will just remind myself to keep it with my personal files.
