p.1 #1 · Some quick iso6400 w/7D

Got the 7D today from my local store. So far looks very promising. Will use it mainly for sports so won't know about the AIServo tracking until this weekend at TCU football.
ISO 6400 looks great. At TCU's endzones it's 1/250th at ISO 1600 so the real test will be Saturday.
All shot at jpg medium.

Wow... thanks for the post. I'm impresssed.. what little noise that is present is rather pleasing. I'm a wedding shooter and I'm looking for something to replace my aging 20D as a backup to my 1DmkIII. I was hoping to find a nice 5D 'classic' but that seems to be harder and harder... This may be the camera I'm looking for.

Looks pretty good. Can't wait to get mine!

Question: Is it just me or do Canon cameras have some problems with reds and oranges, especially at the higher ISOs?

I haven't gotten around to the settings, but typically all my Canons are tough on reds.

I really wish people would stop calling the original 5D "classic".

It's ORIGINAL, not classic.

Imo, shooting at iso6400 is decent light defeats the point of using 6400.

I'd like to see a test in a rather dark room, something more "real world".

Doesn't really defeat the point when you shoot sports at dusk or under the lights.
Here's some from inside the house.

I rather thought it was a classic by now...

OP, Great ISO6400 shots, even starting to tempt a full frame shooter like me

Well, for ISO6400 those look astonishing, particularly from a 18 MP crop camera.

It will be interesting to see some sampled taken Raw and run through noise ninja or neat image.

These are so much better than my 40D it's not even funny.

That's freaking amazing.

I really, really wish this was full frame...I can't bring myself around to paying the money for a cropped sensor as a backup to my 5d.

Those look somewhat noisy considering noise is visible at web size, but better than any APS-C cameras for sure, and still usable.

Can you post any 100% crops? Those crops look like about 25% crops at best.

Looks good Jim and I look forward to hearing your impressions after the TCU game. Mine won't be here until next week.

Nice lamp BTW.

I'll post my impression after the game. It's a night game so it ought to be a good workout. The lamps are part of my Hula Girl collection from over the years. Maybe I should have posted a NSFW warning

Nice test shots. I'm really interested in hearing how the 7D does shooting football. Will you be shooting it side-by-side with another camera?

Hi Jim
The mark IIn is still cranking along taking fantastic pictures out in the Everglades. Glad you posted these pic's, i've been looking at the new 7d and i'm sure you'll be giving it a real workout, like the high iso shots. Still got the Tony Romo shot on my screen saver. By the way the lady in the last shot forgot her bra.

Capt. Don... glad that IIn is still working out for you. Don't let any of them gators get you in the swamps. I'll post some football results after Saturday.

Well if you wish to split hairs...formally it's neither. The camera goes by 5D. Not 5D Classic, 5D Original, 5DI or 5DMKI...just 5D.

As for the images, they look good for what the camera is

Jim,

Thanks for sharing the high ISO results for the 7D. I shoot sports with a pair of 1DII bodies. I plan to replace the first "to go" with a 1DIII. The 7D might be a good and less expensive alternative (with a touch more reach).

Jim
