Thanks for answering my question. I didn't realize you were receiving them so soon. I plan to buy your new dish in the next few weeks.
I have another question if you have the time to answer it: what's a white version of the new beauty dish supposed to do that the silver version with sock won't do?
--Jaddie
The white version gives you much lower output over a very wide angle, with less specularity - good for close in work. The silver is so efficient you will have to use mighty low power to use it in close. But if you put the sock on the silver they are pretty close in output and "softness"

Any rough estimate on when the white version will be out?
Shouldn't be too long - I'm waiting on a time frame from the vendor. I would anticipate around 30 days, but when I anticipate her I get slammed. I believe we are out of the classic 22BD.
I just learned they haven't been shipped yet - I thought they had. We did receive a new shipment with cosmetic flaws - sctraches on the outside that don't affect performance. People have been happy with them and the discount.
Paul, I got my HOBD. As with other modifiers I've tried, it doesn't exactly fit snug on my AB800, which I assume is just a downside of the mounting system used on ABs. It's not much, but it does droop off a bit.
I was wondering if the Einstein will provide a more robust mount or do I have to move up to a WL for something like this? Is this just a downside of the ABs being such small units?

Are you saying that the dish isn't tight to the strobe or that the elbow of the stand mount slips?
My dish fits snug to the strobe. I wonder if some of the 4 angled mounting tabs are bent a bit open.
The first pic is a closeup of the modifier mounting tabs on an Alien Bee B800 strobe. The next two are of the new 22" High Output beauty dish mounted on the B800.
I just wanted to show some pics of what it looks like securely mounted so that others can compare if theirs is loose.
To clarify, mine isn't loose at all, the problem is that the beauty dish doesn't sit flush with the AB. It sags off a bit. I'll take some photos of this later, but honestly, with your photos gpsphoto, I don't think you'd be able to see what I'm talking about. You'd need to take a shot on the other side and see where the dish meets the AB.
Thing is, I'm surprised by how much light this thing puts out. I have 1 AB800 at lowest power, stand about 8 feet away and I'm still at ISO 100 and f/18.
It nukes the hell out of everything!
On a sidenote, I know somebody mentioned a small boom to point the BD downward. What make was it? I can't find the post in this thread...
I doesn't put out as much power as you're getting. At 320WS (AB800) I get f22 at 10'. AB400 at minimum power is 6 f stops less than this and should yield about f2.8. Did you dump the power when you lowered it to minimum power? Sounds like you AB800 was at about 1/2 power to get f18 at 8'.
Putting the sock on should drop the output about 2 f stops,

Einstein has a more precise grip. The ABs tend to allow all accessories to sag a little bit because of the way the fingers are bent. This isn't usually a problem in use.

Mr Paul,
How is work on the white beauty dish progressing? Will it available within a month? Will it be based on the same design of the current silver HOBD? In other words, will it still have the same narrow light beam without using a grid? and finally, will it be priced closer to the HOBD or the older white beauty dish? I'm curious to know.. I'm currently debating on whether to snag one of the older beauty dishes while their still available or wait for a newer version. Thank you.
We are waiting for white samples of the 22HOBD. Because of the white rather than reflective silver it will be very wide angle and lower output and nearly identical to the classic white dish. I have painted one and tested it here, with very good results. It should be ready within a month and, good news, will be priced the same as the 22HOBD.
