Just imagine.....if the amount of man hours put into 'debating' this camera....had been put into creating photographic images instead........
That's heavy. Quick, somebody queue John Lennon.....
I ordered mine from Tiger Direct and got $255 back through Bing Cashback. My out the door cost is $1445. They are not making this offer anymore but I talked to them today and they are getting 400 units in 10/1/09 and they only have 100 preordered.
I have received my camera. Loaded one of my extra charged batteries and lit her up. The camera feels as solid or more solid than my 5D II. Now to figure this thing out! :^) Oh live view is nice to but the same kind of focus that is, well, ok with the contrast type they use but no better than the 5D II. Oh, focus, spot on with the 100 IS I also got, which is sharp as hell.
I have used the camera a little now. The body doesn't feel more solid than the 5D II and I don't really like the slightly glossy rough finish. Other than that it should do very well. The exposure seems to work better than my 5D II and the focus areas are nice and fast.
For those who have received their 7Ds, just a quick question: are you seeing any black specks in the viewfinder? Not dust per se, but black specks. In the past I've had a few of these show up over time but never so soon. I noticed this morning after yesterday's outing I have 4 small black specs in the VF. Now I'll likely just send it to Canon for cleaning at some point since the focusing screen isn't user replaceable and these are above the screen. Just curious if anyone else is seeing these in their new 7Ds?
Just got my confirmation call "YES" I called my order in to J&R this AM. I wanted it shipped to work and gave them my cell #, they called on the work line, they must have looked it up checking to make sure everything was up to par. Glad to see they do their home work.
Dang, I should have ordered from J&R! I pre-ordered on the 15th from Adorama and they still haven't shipped. I called and they said hopefully after the holiday (so Monday). The wait is killing me!

So now there are some 7D's in the wild, can anyone tell me whether, with an f1.2 or f1.4 lens shot wide open, the viewfinder shows deeper depth of focus than the reviewed image on the back of the camera?
Looking through a 50 1.4 wide open, it does appear to have more depth of field in the viewfinder than the image. If I understand the question correctly. Using the depth of field button, I can see some difference between 1.4 and 2.8, but not much.
I picked mine up yesterday and am so far impressed with it. Like others have said, the build quality feels better than a 40D. (never had a 5d) Aside from the size, it does feel more like a 1 series. That said, it's definitely NOT a 1 series and to me doesn't balance as well with a 70-200 2.8 for instance. I'm sure I'll get used to it soon enough. ( I don't shoot the 40 D all that much, my wife does.)
The rear screen is fantastic. Never having seen a 5d2, I can't compare, but it's superior to a 40 D and a Mk 3. I like the menu setup, didn't take too long to find my way around. Obviously reading the book helps, but I suspect those who are allergic to the book can figure it out anyway. The quick control button is nice. I especially like the white balance control being there as I can never remember what all the little icons mean and on my Mk 2, I'm too blind without glasses to tell the difference between sunlight and tungsten for instance with the tiny icons on the LCD. Focus seems quick, kinda twitchy like a Mk 3 and will take some getting used to for sports. The customization features are a nice addition and I'm sure I'll find the settings that work for me.
I'm not done playing with it yet, but it seems to me the focus out of the box is a bit off. It looks like +7 on the microadjustment is about right, but I haven't tried all my lenses yet and haven't shot enough to rule out user error. Someone else said they had the same thing with theirs. Wondering if QC got a bit lax in this area when they added micro adjustment.
I'll be shooting some volleyball with it tomorrow, so that will be the true test for me. Just been playing around the house with it so far and getting used to the setup.
BTW, got mine at a local camera shop. They got 1 yesterday and were expecting another today. I think they only ordered 6, but at least they are moving through the pipeline.

I would also like to hear a little more about this - or whether or not the focusing screens are user replaceable.
