As a recent convert from a 1.6x crop body to a 1.3x crop body I can tell you I will never go back. I get SO much more value from my wide angle lenses now, and if I need more on my telephoto I can simply buy a 1.4x teleconverter.

Teleconverter works with APS-C body too, and so does 800L.
If you are mainly shooting under 200 mm I don't see how an APS-C be more attractive as well.
And of course, if you have more money to spend than the need for reach, you won't miss APS-C either.
For the others, APS-C has its place, especially where pixel density matters.
For me I don't have an APS-C body at the moment, but it remains an option. A lot of it depends on how it would work out for me using Canon mount macro lens on M43 body without AF and aperture control.

Ok, seems like I am the only one!
I went from the 30D to the 1DII and I miss the 1.6x crop. In fact, I am considering selling my 1DII and getting the 7D depending how well the new 19point AF modules is; its just a pity about the noise levels on that 7D...

I have what you have + the 40D. Often times, I feel like selling the mk2, but *cannot* do it, I review the images the camera has produced for me and feel that I am about to make a mistake by selling it.
And with an impending African safari, I have too much to gamble (might not even get a 7D by then) by going for the 7D. The mk2's AF shall serve me well, besides, it is proven and tested.
Will buy the 7D by end of next year...by then, it will be well tested.. :-)
To answer the OP, no, I don't miss 1.6x cos I have it along with the 1.3x.

Yes, I have the 50D along with my 1DII and I cant rely on the focus with the 50D however if the 7D has much better AF then I may go with a 7D/50D combo (or perhaps a 7D/5DII combo if I get rich before then ;-)

With all of the photos that I have seen in the Nature and Wildlife section I feel my 5D w/300mm f4 and 1.4X TC will cover 90% of the photographs that I will take that need a long focal length. I still have my old 20D and if I do need the extra reach. Instead I will upgrade to the 40D and save a bundle.
Besides I like the FF for my 17-40 f4L where I can get a true 17mm view.

Not at all. I'm shooting a 1.3 crop factor, and images are smoother and creamier than the 1.6. There is a distinct difference, and it was a real bonus when I first moved to the 1.3.

In average day situations where you can walk to your subject i don't miss it. No way. If you do birding etc I can imagine you scre a 1,4 teleconverter on it.
1d3 rocks in every aspect over the crop. Try it or rent it I would say.

When I first got my 1DMk2 I couldn't bear to pick up the 20D for quite a while, and when I did it felt like a toy. I've been using the 20D fairly often recently, though, because there are a lot of times when I don't want the weight or bulk of the 1D2. I was on the verge of replacing the 20D with a 50D for the times when I need to crop more than is reasonable with 1D2 + TC + 500/4. Now it looks like I'll need to lay out a few hundred dollars extra for a 7D, but it looks like it will be supplementing rather than replacing the 1D2.

I've seen some incredible images here from xxd cameras. I've discarded just about all the images I had from my 20D and Rebel XTI. I discarded all images from the 30D I bought. I forget what problem it had...it did not give me images as nice as the 20D. I returned that camera. My friend with a Mark II N returned a 40D. Someone told me that the first digital camera images that National Geographic accepted were from the 1D Mark II. I don't know if that is true. In my humble opinion, and from my personal experience, images from my xxd cameras just did not hold up nearly as well at 100 percent like images from my 1D Mark IINs. That translates to being able to crop and enlarge a much more satisfactory image for a print.

Some have upgraded from a 1.6x crop body to a 1D. So do you miss the smaller/cheaper/croppier camera or has the 1D arrived at nirvana?
Maybe a little...
However, if I had unlimited money and had a choice of a 1D4 (assuming it is announced sooner than later in time for the Winter Olympics) or a 7D... I wouldnt even think twice about passing over the 7D...

I dislike the cameras with small sensors. The only use I have for them is as a "teleconverter" for long lenses when there is not enough reach.
