Yes, the OVF of the G10 is pretty bad, but a significant improvement on the G7/G9. At least it's more or less centred on the image! You just have to remember that there's about 10% more all round that you can't see. I find I can use this for times when precise composition is secondary to a better hold.
The G10 is capable of producing very detailed images at low ISO and does the job well. On prints, up to ISO 400 is actually quite usable. The screen may be the advantage the G11 has to offer.
Unless the G11 can produce very good low noise images at ISO800 or ISO1600, something tells me my G10 will stay.

If I'm not mistaken, canon also claimed the 50d would be 1.5 stops better than the 40d...
You are not mistaken regarding the "50D versus 40D 1.5 stop improvement in high ISO noise" claim. Canon's claim was proven (by everybody on the planet) to be false ... it didn't matter if you did your comparison on a per-pixel or per-picture basis ... the claim was clearly false.
I'm pretty sure it will have better noise characteristics. Just lowering the pixel count will do that. The better processor will add to it. A slightly better chip technology adds too.
I don't understand the skepticism.
Comparing this to the 40D - 50D question isn't fair. There, they added a lot more pixels, here they subtracted a lot of pixels.
Besides I've made more than a few comparison photos with my daughters 40D and her newer 50D. at the same print size, the noise is about the same. Pixel to pixel noise comparisons aren't valid. You need print to print comparisons - with the same size prints. When you do that, they have the same noise, or lower noise from the 50D, but the 50D can also be seen as sharper.
I'm tired of seeing images online being pushed as significant.
I would imagine this camera will be more than a bit better in the noise department, though I too would have preferred a slightly bigger sensor. The "G" series cameras already have slightly larger sensors than other compacts, nor including, of course, the 4/3 cameras. but they all have so many other problems as cameras that I can't imagine buying one myself.
In addition to the differences mentioned between the G11 and the S60, there is the significant qaulity difference in construction, the better quality lens, and better processing of the images.
