Ok, keep the 2nd of September in your diary.

Fingers crossed for a new hand strap MK II.

Hey, money's really tight right now. I gotta skim-down the wish list!

Hot off the press:

Didn't they just lower the price of the MKIII?

while not a total let down (the MP's didn't go up) Canon has led everyone to believe that they would put a larger sensor in the next G series camera. In reality we get what, another (or left over) 1/1.7 Sony 10MP CCD with improved firmware to lower the noise and a new marketing campaign?

Perhaps September will bring some serious announcements.. And then again, perhaps not...

Wow ... I should've stayed awake later than 2:00 AM Central US time. I really missed all the excitement and the products - deadly! Go Canon! I'm actually more interested in the G11 now that they've dropped the Megapixels to 10, and included the articulating LCD. I'm looking for a P&S for those times when my SLR is too much camera.

What's the big deal with the articulating LCD? Everyone talks about these like they're something really special and great..After having owned many camera with them, and still having my favorite Pro-1 I'd say in reality, they're convenient about 5% of the time and the rest of the time they do little more than cost money and prevent better features from being added.

An articulating LCD or a working and decent VF? I'll take the VF any day of the week.

An articulating LCD or a decent sensor? I'll take the sensor any day of the week.

I'm not saying this about you, but to me this is another feature that people parrot a "must have" attitude" without understanding that it's always a trade off. Usable features 100% of the time, or something like this. Again, I'll take the things that help on EVERY shot and give up the gimmicks...

James ... I guess you missed the heavy dose of sarcasm in my post

I was hoping to read about the new 60D and maybe, just maybe, be tempted to fork over $1500 to upgrade from my 30D. And when I saw that Canon had blessed mankind with a bunch of P&S POS, I cracked up ... this is what everyone was waiting on tenterhooks for?

But, it is also good that Canon finally saw that more MP on a small sensor = bad idea, and dropped the G11's resolution to 10 MP, a good move. And the articulating LCD has been very very handy for me, with my old G3 and then my wife's S5IS, for macro shots and ground shots where I didn't have to lie on the floor to compose. More importantly, lowering the Megapixel count on the G11 is (hopefully) an indication that the 60D might also be 12MP or so and not a step up (down, really) from the 50D in terms of MP.

Instead of lowering the MP (akin to going "ok we fail, let's just ease back our goals"), why don't they work at improving what they had?

Canon really can't do right by some people... I've seen so many posts about how 15MP is too much for a P&S small sensor and here they are reducing the MP and still some people bitch about it. Damn...

There are plenty of things I would change about the G11 to make it perfect for me ( a proper viewfinder being the most important for me ymmv) but it does seem a decent step in the right direction and a clear departure from the more-meg-means-more-sales Canon philosophy thus far. This is a good thing I think

I think if anything this validates the "50 pounds of crap in a 5 pound bag" rule. Canon management and marketing decided that quality didn't matter, it was all about putting another pound of crap in the bag. If 10MP is good, then 15 must be better.

For verification, look at the 5d or Nikon D3. Both able to produce high quality photos at 12+MP on a sensor 10x larger than the G series. We have a 21MP 5d2 that produces crappy jpegs (don't own one, but from everything I've seen and read). Sometimes, you go too far and can't just fix what you have.

Also, look at the 10MP Panny LX-3. Images were as good as or superior to the 15MP G10.

I love how bent out of shape everyone gets over these announcements.

Were all of you infants in the film days? Try FIVE YEARS between new pro body updates. Nikon released the F4 in 1989 and did not release the F5 until 1996 (which I personally think is still the best camera ever made). They barely put new amateur cameras out every year.

Do you guys really think Canon is going to go through the rest of the fall without new pro bodies with the Winter Games coming next year. Come on folks. Hasn't anyone else noticed that Canon and Nikon are moving away from the "traditional" months of announcements and just rolling them out whenever they're ready? The days of two rounds of announcements per year is over.

And, for the love of God quite confusing some pimply teenager's speculation posts with the intentions of Canon and Nikon. Canon never promised anything for today, it was all rumor!

Things sure were simpler back in the days right gramps?

This is what happens when something goes mainstream. It happened with PC hardwares/softwares and now it's happening with cameras.
