p.1 #1 · How do you do it?

This is a question for those who do onsite printing, or for those who did it before moving to online sales.
How do you guys process so many images in so little time, so that the participants of the event you are shooting can see their photos and order prints minutes later after their competition is over??
Or is it that you don't do any post-processing?? Do you shoot RAW or JPG?

Also, when you are shooting in a remote location with no power available, How do you power up your computer and your printer??

I have been invited to shoot the Enduro National Campionship in about two weeks, and it is going to take place in a remote location and I can't figure out how to print while I am at the location

Thank you for your help

Loco

I have often wondered that myself. This past weekend, it took 2 hours just to download all of my images, I can't imagine trying to get them printed, and ready for potential clients to view and purchase.

Every event is different, so I can only speak for the stage events we cover.

A typical event such as cheerleading can yield over 50,000 photos so we do not have time to post process every image prior to showing them. This means we must start by hiring quality photographers who can chimp bad images on the fly and produce well cropped tight action jpg’s every time. The rest falls under technology and workflow.

Every photographer has a card reader at their location that runs to a computer (typically a beefy laptop). We assign one photographer per stage (center photographer) the responsibility of selecting the correct team and uploading the images. (two click process) This uploads every photographers images simultaneously to our server. (typically 3 photographers per stage, 300 images every 4 minutes). Our servers receives the images from our uploading stations connected via Cat6 cable often over 300’ away and process them into custom simple to navigate html web pages. This allows our customers to quickly find their child or team name. Once the images are selected and ordered our staff quickly crops the images to fit the print size, adds a custom border/text if requested and prints them onsite. The customer is given a number (Like at the Deli) and told their photos will be available for pickup in 10-15 minutes.

The processing time from camera to viewing stations is well under 1 minute to upload the 300+ images. We use Gigabit Ethernet connection from the importing stations on the floor to our servers. We use wireless connection from the server to our viewing stations (at this point these images are small 600 pixel previews with Proof watermarks on them)

When there is no power we use generators. Most of our events are inside however we do have a Synchronized Figure Skating event that requires us to provide our own electricity. A 6500w generator is sufficient in providing power for our viewing stations, servers and printers. (but don’t forget to buy a backup)
