My solution is simple and did work without rebooting.

Browse with explorer to Photohop 64 installation folder
Rename photoshop.exe to something else (e.g. photoshop.bkp.exe)

Now change file association to photoshop 32 bit by right-clicking a psd file / properties / Change... / browse... and select the photoshop.exe from program files (x86). Be sure that the "alway use this program" checkbox is checked.

Click ok on all dialog boxes and try to open the psd file. Now that it's working, you can rename the 64 bit exe to it's original name. If you don't rename this exe, you might not be able to retreive all previous associations to photoshop using the "Set associations" from control panel, meaning that you will have to remember all extensions that were associated to photoshop when you'll want to apply this fix to other extensions.

p.2 #3 · How to set windows 7 to open photoshop 32 bit not 64 bit?

Hi guys,
After installing Windows 7 64 bit on my Acer Aspire 8930g and my home PC I have experienced the same problems with the 64 bit association.
I followed the above guides and almost all the problems have been solved and my images, PSD files etc all open in the 32 bit version of Photoshop CS4.

Just one small problem though if I open Adobe Bridge without the 32 bit version of Photoshop being opened and I click on an image then click "open in camera raw" then make some adjustments and click on "open image" I still get the same error code that i get if i try to open the 64 bit version of photoshop (0xc000007b) or sometimes nothing happens at all.

If I have 32 bit Photoshop open and click on an image then click "open in camera raw" then make some adjustments and click on "open image" the image will automatically open in Photoshop.

I know the obvious answer is to have both programs opened side by side and cut out the middle process but if one of the more technically minded out there has a solution your help would be greatly appreciated

Iain

I have the same situation except it doesnīt give me an error. If I donīt have 32-bit PS open already, an "open in camera raw" followed by an open image will give me 64-bit PS. If 32-bit PS is already open, however, it will use that.

I have just tried to get used to using Open instead of Open in Camera Raw. I, too, would be interested in a fix if there is one.

When you're done with Camera Raw, instead of clicking "Open Image", click "Done". Then, just double-click your image, in the Adobe Bridge interface. Doing this will open the 32-bit version.

If you followed my Registry Entries, "Open" should work fine. It will open the 32-bit version.

As far as the Camera Raw situation, if you click "Done", instead of "Open Image", then you open it from Adobe Bridge, it should open in the 32-bit version correctly.

It was precisely your registry edits that I applied a while back that got me more or less fixed, wm, and as I said in my post I am trying to get used to using Open instead of Open in Camera Raw so that 32-bit PS comes up.

My problem (and I suspect Iainīs, too) is that I have been using Open in Camera Raw for a long time because it comes up faster and sometimes you donīt need to open PS. Itīs getting over the habit that is taking some time.

I am sure your "Done and double-click" would work, too, but again, itīs a habit thing plus just using Open would seem to be more direct.

It just seems weird that there is not a way to get Camera Raw to default to 32-bit PS when everything else can.

Thanks William that works but as Eyeball said i am just too used to using open image from camera raw, i guess if there is no other work around i shall just have to get used to doing it that way.

Thanks,

Iain

Iain, sorry, a pretty random question (given the topic).

I am about to buy a 8930G and I'll be using Lightroom and PS a lot.
When possible I'll be using an external monitor, but I would really appreciate your opinion about the 8930G screen.

On paper it sounds good, (high gamut) but It's quite difficult to find out in google how good or bad the screen is for photo editing.
The alternative would be a dell xps 16 with the best of their screens, but that's a bit over my budget and I'd rather go for the 8930g.

Hope you find a moment for sharing your opinion.
Thanks!

Hi

I'm a XP 64-bit user. I work my images in Photoshop CS5 34-bit (so I can make use of plug-ins). As many, I'd like to right-click an image file (TIFF, PSD or RAW) and open it in CS5 32-bit promptly. All the solutions posted here make sense. I have eperimented each and every one of these, followed all the steps but... no success. Any updated solution in this meantime? Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
