I think I would prefer the idea of 13 real cross AF points instead a 5D AF with two assist points less.
And the diamond layout is not "my cup of tea" I would prefer the third one with the four points you put as assist points located two at each side and make it more as a rectangular layout.
They won't change the location of existing focus points. It would be a problem for their flashes, which already know where the points are and use them for the AF assist beam.

I thought this was done by command from the body? What happens when you have a 1D series, which is laid out differently?
The AF module is a RISC processor that passes the data to the Digic processor. Before adding any more AF points, the first step Canon must take is upgrade the RISC processor in the AF module and have new software for it. In my opinion, 13 AF points, if all cross type with Digic V or Dual Digic IV (unlikely due to battery power consumption), with a newer RISC processor plus software will be VERY potent. It will be very fast and accurate and will exceed even the Nikon D3X in AF performance. I think Canon is much superior to Nikon in software implementation.

I like using one never really take it off. I did use all 9 awhile back and I was kind of impressed better than what I was expecting
Which makes me think, how many of you are actually shooting with more than one AF point?
Still have to understand how you guys are coping with BIF, sorry
Three would be a major leap forward, since even the much-hyped Nikon AF didn't get sensors in the corners. If there's any truth to the rumor, one and two seem more likely.
