I'm not sure what you're basing either of those assertions on.

From the product pic, the Broncolor satellite dish looks more like an indirect beautydish than a softbox.

This product is more akin to the Profoto Giant Umbrella:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/584946-REG/Profoto_100316_505_452_Giant_Umbrella_Style.html

........or the Elinchrom indirect lightbanks:

.........both of these products are in the $900 and up range.

I will watch with great interest for examples of real-life application once people start using these.

You and me both. It's something I'd buy in a heartbeat if it produced results similar to the more expensive alternatives (focused, crisp, subtle shadow transitions, perfect for pulling detail out of wardrobe) and if the build quality was solid...but if it's just another umbrella, well, I've already got 6 or 8 of those gathering dust.

Yep, I'll get one myself if they provide that quality of light. Hensel offers a para umbrella, but I don't know of anyone who owns one: http://www.henselusa.com/product.html

Did you read the product description on it?

"The motive will be contrasty."

I think that's going to be the tagline on my next portfolio site revision.

Just got my two today, large and small silver, with the diffuser fabric. Just fired off a few for grins, I'll really work the smaller one out on location tomorrow. Note that I'm an amateur, so take all this with a grain of salt. Quick takes:

The material is substantial, and the thing overall seems pretty durable, with poly-something ribs, and steel tips. The fabric appears two be a black and silver material bonded together.

Comes with a nice sleeve for carrying the thing around in.

Only negatives so far are:
The umbrella shaft pokes out about a foot past the back of my ab800, and while I used my softbox more than umbrellas, having little experience with umbrellas (and none at all with parabolics), it took some 'rembembering' to stay out of the way of the shaft, when it was close up.

The diffusion material seems to hang pretty loosely on the rib tips. The two points closest to the ground fall off, with no negative detriment to utility, but I wonder how it'll do outside, with a little breeze. I'll reserve judgement on this once the whole thing 'loosens up', which I would think would stretch the umbrella material out enough to hold more tension in the diffusion material.

I understand that the plm reflector (not yet available, in a few weeks I was told) will restrict the side spill. I didn't think that would be important, but I have some work ahead of me figuring out how to point this so that I don't get a lot of light coming off the environment due to this. It was an issue for my tests, but this is not a new issue in lighting, and I'm sure it's manageable, but I'll be getting the PLM reflector just the same.

Other than those two observations, I'm very pleased. It's the largest modifier I've ever worked with, and I have many nights ahead of me getting a feel for what it can do. I did to a full-on shot of the thing firing, and the pattern does seem quite even, not weighting to the edges or inside, but very even, at least so far as I can see. Only thing I tried that really takes advantage of it's size is a simulated interior window, flooding lateral light in. It was really amazing to get shots that look like a dead ringer for natural indoor light, but at ISO100 f/8. Next task will be some full-lengths.

This thing is an outrageous value, and I can't see why I'll hold onto my old 24x36 softbox. Every AB user should have 1 (or more!) of the things.

Hello, I'm happy that you've received your stuff, I wonder if you could publish a picture of the PLM itself, just to see how it looks...I can't see any real picture of it on the web, just some 3D renders.

Thanks.

Yes, PLEASE post some pics of it. I'm ready to get one, because it is a good value, even simply if it ends up being a large umbrella.

A POTN user posted this of his PLM arrival.

I'm quite surprised how far the rod is bending, quite worrisome actually.

Yikes! You're gonna end up with another stand behind it just trying to support the weight.

(EDIT: typo...shouldn't post before my morning coffee.)

Glen,

I suppose the rod is thin because it is meant to go through the umbrella shaft holder on the AB head. But, I think what the dude was trying to say is that he doesn't think the head will support the PLM, so he decided to use a heavier duty umbrella fitting.

Good luck.

The rod is meant to go through the holder on the AB head until the AB is very close to the PLM, leaving most of the rod exposed at the back end of the AB. Look at the pictures on the AB website. The PLM is up close to the head, not a meter away from it like it is in the video.
That's why the rod is bent.

At the very least, he should try positioning the rod at least 3-6 inches further into the umbrella fitting to better balance the weight. I would throw a head on a grip arm and position it into the PLM. I wonder if the guy has already tried to put the rod through the built-in umbrella holder on his light.

Does the PLM come with a silver interior? Don't see much use using a white fabric interior.
