p.1 #1 · Will you upgrade to the new 70-200vr when and if it comes out?

Well will ya? I don't need the 70-200VR right now, as I just got a D700, and have currently got my NAS in check, but I would like to get a 70-200 F2.8 VR at some point. I was just wondering if any of you guys are waiting for an update (), or if any of you are planning on upgrading from the current version to the new version (assuming we get one).

Obviously I wouldn't want to just buy a 70-200 only to have a new version suddenly released with Nano coatings, VR II, better corner sharpness and so on. On top of that, the price of the current version would drop would it not?

On the other hand, by the time the lens is announced, and then actually available to the public I assume we'd be looking at feb next year? (I'm guessing the new version would be released in sept/oct by thom hogans guesses, and judging by how long it took for the 50 1.4G to be widely available).

Any thoughts?

I'm happy with my 80-200 AF-S to not want to trade it for a lens that's not even announced.

I guess I'm aiming the question primarily at those that feel the need to have the latest and greatest, whether or not it's been announced yet or not

I'm happy with the 70-200 as is. Just like I still have the older 28-70/2.8 even though the newer 24-70 is available. I like to take pictures, not collect the newest and bestest gear.

I love the current 70-200/2.8 VR on film and on DX digital. I haven't had the privilege of trying it on FX digital yet, but I'd imagine that it'd perform about the same as it does on film...

...I did, however, just sell this lens to fund a kit-shift to an 85mm f/1.4 AFD and 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 AFS VR because I just need a fast tele-prime for portraits and a lighter/more compact tele zoom for hiking.

If a new version is released, I'd probably rebuy a 70-200/2.8 VR at a lower price unless the newer/replacement lens is way less heavy, has coverage to 300mm, and has significantly better optical performance (though I can't figure out how the 70-200/2.8 VR can get much better, save for better control of vignetting/edge sharpness on FX/film... it's the fastest AF lens I've ever shot with, and has silky smooth creamy bokeh).

Unless business calls for it, I'll let all of the early adopters shell out the big bucks for the new one and pick up a used one a few months later.

NO! I'm a DX shooter and will be as long as Nikon maintains a pro-level DX body like the D300.

Heck yeah! The D3x just kills the current lens in the corners. I've tried an 80-200, and for now, that's what I'm using. The current 70-200 is a touch better in the center areas though, so it's all a compromise. So, when the new lens comes out, yeah, I'll be first in line

Now, on my D300, the current 70-200 just sings, so I'd say any DX shooter should stick with it - probably gonna see a lot of cheap ones after the new lens comes out.

I hear there are supposed to be a couple Nikon announcements soon - end of this month and beginning of next - so we'll hopefully have it by then <crosses fingers>.

Nope, nothin' wrong with mine on the D3 for what pays the bills. YMMV, so happy waiting/shopping...if so inclined.

It depends how good the new lens will be.
When it's in the same category as the 14-24 I'll upgrade, if not I'll probably won't.
That's the reasonable explanation, but NAS could spoil this.

I think I will not upgrade. I am happy with the current config I have. I won't upgrade the 50 1.4 AF-D for the AF-S either.

Yes, I will. Why? Because I sold my 70-200 in Jan of this year thinking the new version was right around the corner. That and selling my minty D2xs were the two worst equipment decisions I've made. Right now I'm looking to add the 14-24 and in the future an upgrade of the 70-200 and that should hold me over for a while.

For the amount of times I use my 80-200 two ring on my D3x, I will stick with it. It is pretty darn sharp edge to edge anyway

i.m happy with my 70-200 right now ! Would I see a difference in my photos .. probably ........ not.

Better corners .. dang, am I doing something wrong ?? I crop em ..

and on my 700, that OLD lens is still a beauty albiet .. alot shorter so I put it on the D80 now when I go out shooting and pretty much just leave the 600mm w/ 1.4TC on it on the 700.

I need a new avator .. NAS NO MORE !

I doubt I'd get one. I replaced the current version with a 70-300vr and have been dare I say happier with that lens. The VR on the current version never really impressed me and I didn't enjoy carrying so much weight when I used it so little. I would like to suppliment the 70-300 with a 135 f/2 or something similar.

No. I'm quite happy with the one I have.

I will upgrade to the new 80-400vr if they ever come out with one. If they don't, I'll probably have to upgrade to a sigma.

nope, not I. If one is made, it may be optically improved a little, but the additional cost for a new one could be $500 or so...factor in selling your old 70-200 and the hit you'd take especially if you bought it new, and you may be looking at almost a $1000 or so added cost for a new 70-200...no thanks!

Not counting the folks here at FM, well, none! My friends shoot (painful to type...) Canon! Now you have me wondering how many D3x shooters are out there. I know of at least 4 here at FM, but that's about it. But gosh darn it, I bet they all want a better 70-200!

No. I've got no complaints with the current lens whether it's mounted on my D300 or D700.

Do you feel the need to have the latest and greatest ?

If so you've already got your answer, and if not, then we'll you've got your answer what to do as well.

Some people are always going to want the latest and greatest but does that mean everyone else should follow suit ?

I know guys who had a D3, loved it, and bought a D3x day it was in stock. More power to them and it must be nice to drop $8k like that, I'd love one if I could afford it.

However, I can't see why it would matter what someone else does

If some other guys bought D3x does that make me any less happy with my D3 ?

Theres not a doubt in my mind that some people will buy a new 70-200 if/when it comes out.

Those same people will also buy a new D700x and/or any other "latest and greatest" gear going.

Its a darn expensive and never ending job trying to keep up with the "jones" of the photo world.

I wouldnt even try, I'd rather just buy what works for you right now and what you can afford
