p.1 #1 · Original 1D focusing same as current 1D's

Does anyone know if the focusing system on the original Canon 1D mk 1 is the same as the 1D MK 3 ?
Has Canon changed anything on the 1D series from the original 1D to the current 1D's

Greatly enhanced, to the point of confusion.

They have the same number of focus points with the same distribution however every newer generation of the 1D had more cross type sensors. I also wonder if the have the special f2.8 sensor with diagonal axis as well on the 1D3? As for the programming and processing that goes on I would assume it has been tweaked but I am a bit unsure.

Not sure, but I remember the 1D being way faster than the 1Ds.

The 1D2/1Ds2 are supposed to focus at the same speed, whereas the Mk1 did not. Processing power has definitely picked up.

All new and improved focus system on the MKIII!

The 1D is as good or better than the MKIII except for low light.

One thing the Mk I (and II) offered that the III lost is manual selection of any of the 45 AF points. However, the Mk III
has more cross-type sensors than the earlier versions.
The Mk III focuses in lower light levels than the earlier bodies could manage.
The focusing algorithms have changed with each model, with plenty of raging arguments about what works and what doesn't.
The 1D Mk I AF was (is) excellent for the resolution at 4MP and the 8 fps speed. 10 or 21 MP can show minor misfocus
that you wouldn't spot in the 1D 4 MP files, but that's not to say that there was anything lacking in the AF performance.
