p.1 #1 · Minaret Morning [3]

A few more from my trip to the Minarets two weeks ago...

And also, I'm very excited to announce that you can now start placing orders for a 2010 calendar on my site. Check it out, everyone needs a calendar, might as well make it a pretty one http://florisvanbreugel.smugmug.com/gallery/8609384_K59HN

#1 - Opalessence. Warm light from the Minarets reflected in a frozen Minaret Lake.

#2 - Minaret Morning, Clyde (the pointy one) and the other Minarets illuminated by a special moment of predawn glow. The soft color is from some exciting stuff going on out east, the sun still had about 15 min before it would come up at this point.

#3 - Corn Lilies. Kind of straightforward... corn lilies under diffuse light and a rock

(let me know if you think the greens are too strong, it's real tough to strike that balance!)

Very nice set, Floris. I think the strong greens in 3 look great against the dull gray of the stone. The first is very minimalist, but still works pretty well. 2 looks like a wonderful place to camp and spend the pre-dawn.

#2 and #3 for me. #3 is very nicely done and i'm ok with the greens. in #2, i feel very slightly that the dark fg and the moving water detracts a little bit - other than that, the light is very nice!

I'm sure the calender is exceptional Floris, The first two are remarkable in their own right, but I'm fascinated with the third. The detail throughout the image is stunning, I'm GREEN with envy, beautiful on all counts!
Thanks for sharing these... (where's that napkin)

Hi Floris,

Great images, all. Last, but not least, Corn Lilies: great greens, texture and the rock makes the comp sing. The morning alpenglow on the Minarets is awesome, as well as the rich, muted reflected colors on the lake. Thanks for sharing.

I really like #1 and #3. I do find the striations in the leaves in #3 really interesting. Perhaps the foreground at the bottom left of #2 is a little distracting. I am always anxious to view your posts as your work is consistently striking. Jaye

Hi Floris.

Nice shots bro!

The first is not doing too much for me, but love the second especially the colors going on! Love the reflection.

#3rd is very cool too. Very nice job!

By the way, a word of caution: I posted a link to my website (with no mention of advertising any product) a couple weeks ago on one of my threads, and got jumped on about it (from a member(s) I won't disclose). Apparently some folks get irritated about mentioning anything about our businesses here. Apparently it is a rule. Yet, I do see a double standard sometimes with some photographers who routinely post links, mention their workshops and product. The line seems grey, but I thought I might make mention of it in case you get a negative reaction.

BTW, the calendar is beautiful! Your owl shots insane!

floris: You have something special in your image of the corn lilies caressing that dense, strong rock. The diffuse light works a wonder of color and contrast. The composition balances everything, with just the right amount of green and steel grey in the frame. A viewer sees the finely textured stone resting diagonal amid a crowd of graceful leaves pointing upward as if in prayer. The scene looks clean and natural. Let me please nominate this one for your calendar.

Thanks folks! I'm glad that corn lily one is popular, I suffered a lot of mosquito bites for it!

Mark - thanks for the warning... I'm hoping I can distract those folks with the three shots

anotherview - it's looking like this one's pretty popular... would make a great june image for next year's calendar

Floris - I like the almost abstract art the first one results in. If you hadn't identified what it was I would not have guessed correctly at all but it's a nice image with a good color balance.

The third one is my favorite - the lighting on the corn lilies leaves a very detailed but not harsh scene and the image reveals more the longer I look at it.

Nice work.

Alan

Very nice shots here Floris. The 2nd one in particular has a very nice feel to it. The last has a very clean and fresh feel to it. Nice work as always.

Hi, Floris. #3 is my favorite of the group. Love the wonderful detail and contrast that you captured. #2 has beautiful light and color. Really like the matted texture of the reflection.

Cheers,
Ed

What a cool diverse set, Floris! You know I dig the 2nd!! We rarely saw that area with so much ice still in the lakes. The early glow on the Minarets is really special!
I also love the last. Extraordinary lighting in the corn lilies! Wonderful shot!

Thanks Barry! You have no idea how excited I was when I rounded that ridge to see the lake like that on the way in. I've been anticipating that for a year.. and to get the timing right on the first try was a real treat. By the time we left, after two nights there, the lake ice was already much less then when we arrived - it doesn't last long!

Hey Floris,

I really like #1 and #2 here. Very cool work on those! I feel strange though with so many liking #3, but for me... it's not doing much, so I must be the odd man out here...

Great job on getting out there to get those shots!

Some great light as usual sir. Dig the abstact in 1 though kinda want the orange to be in the bottom left corner...but that's a nit. 2 is just solid. 3...man...there's something to the processing that really brings this out. i know you have worked w/ marc and it shows. look forward to getting that tip one day. great capture w/ the textures and greens.

Thanks! Not sure what you mean by working with marc though... I use completely different processing methods from him I did do a little more fancy color stuff on that one to get the greens to come out right though.

I'm not going to try to pick a favorite here; I think these are all great. The gold and blues in #1 are lovely and well-composed - abstract but still easy for your eyes to get a handle on. Great glow in #2, and the greens in #3 look perfect to me.

All three are quite wonderful. (Just back from the Sierra myself, I now the Minarets area well, and I love corn lilies! :-)

The corn lily shot is really fine - which is not to diminish the wonderful quality of the others. Funny you mentioned the intensity of the green. I have two monitors. On the non-calibrated monitor they did not look too intense/saturated, but my initial impression on my calibrated monitor is that they could come back down a bit. But I can see where you are going with the intense colors as well, so in the end it is a judgment call.

Nice work.

Dan
