It seems to me the D40 is the real Nikon option for me since all of my old lenses will work on it. .
I gave a friend of mine a 300/4.5 Nikkor for shooting the night sky and he liked it so much he bought a 50/1.4 for available light shooting (up 'til then he only had the kit that he'd never taken off HIS D40...)...he likes them both a lot...
