Dumb question about monitor profiling

Since "Monaco EZ Color Monaco Optix XR" bundle has been discontinued and does not work with Windows Vista, does anyone know if a profile created with XP can be transferred from another computer with XP to the Vista Computer or does loading the profile require the Vista computer to use the incompatable software when it loads the profile?

Monitor profiling depends on a number of things, including the graphics card of the PC, so in effect it is unique to the PC/ monitor setup.

Although you could transfer the profile across, and it would "work", it wouldn't be the "correct" profile for your other PC.

Howard, Isn't that just for Vista 32?

af120835, The 2 computers are using the same monitor, so would that make a difference? Even though I have changed the monitor settings when calibrating, the profile as I understand it is just a description of how it looks. I'm not happy with Optix as they should have had an upgrade package rather than the new over $500 package. I was thinking about buying the Spyder3 Pro for just the monitor, but now B&H recommended that I get the whole bundle and calibrate the printer as well, rather than using the Epson R1800 profiles.

A profile describes an output system—in the case of a monitor, it's the unique combination of one video card and one monitor. The results may be good enough for government work, so feel free to give it a shot, but be aware things may be off in subtle as well as obvious ways.

If you're happy with your Optix XR (it's actually a really nice device) and want to keep using it, ColorEyes Display Pro supports it on Vista 64. $175 app, 10 day free demo.

I'd ignore B&H and just get the Spyder3 Pro otherwise. It's cheap, it works well, and IMHO the Spyder3Print is way more trouble than it's worth for the results it gives. And if you're using Epson's profiles on Epson's papers, they're excellent and there's rarely a reason to replace them with custom profiles.

Just to answer your question really (I can see my reply could be open to interepretation), as Colin said above, it's dependent on both the monitor AND graphics card of the PC.

Unless the PCs and graphics cards are identical (even then I'd have reservations), it's unlikely that the profile will give the same results: i.e. one image displayed by one PC will look different to the same image displayed by another PC, even if it the same monitor is used.

Hey, thanks you guys, this is really helpful information.

My new graphics card is a NVIDIA GEForce 9500GS which HP totally recommended for working on photos, but Adobe just told me that it is NOT for photos and I will loose a couple features of CS4. The features I loose are no biggy though. I guess it's good to check with more people than just the sales people for everything.
