p.1 #1 · Budget printers

Hi

A (senior) relative has asked me for advice about getting a cheap but decent colour printer... Some where in the region of £60/80 pounds... He wants to use it for both photos and letter writing.

Its been a while since I even looked at printers, as I'm using a 3 year old Epson R2400 and a Brother b/w laser, don't know how the market has changed since and have no idea what to advise him!

I presume that Epson and Canon are still the way to go (?), but would appreciate some advice on models - I don't want to recommend something that he ends up forking out for expensive ink, or something that has complicated drivers/software as he's not very experienced with computers (uses Windows Vista).

Could any kind soul give me a few tips

Sue

I recently purchased an Epson Workforce 600 for documents and for the odd 4x6 or 5x7 print. It's an all in one printer, i.e. copies, scans, faxes and prints good quality photos and is wi-fi enabled. It uses dye inks, not pigments, but is of good quality and would do fine for the person who prints photos only occasionally. The document quality output is excellent.

It might be a bit tricky for the senior relative to set up (especially the wireless part) but you could probably do it for him/her, no? Once set up, it's pretty much fool proof.

I got it on sale for $150 CDN but have no idea of the prices in the UK, I'm afraid.
