p.1 #1 · Second Outing with 50D

Managed to grab a couple of hours out and about today between the rain.

Was playing with stopping the lens down to increase sharpness as was suggested yesterday, this ended up with a move to full manual and a realization that Auto ISO does not seem to go above 400 in Manual - is this correct ?

Anyways heres a couple from today - C&C as aways welcome and needed

Thanks in advance
Rob

#1 - Protective Mother
#2 - The Offspring

Well I feel this is a huge improvement from the first set.

# 1, 2 & I'll add 3 because I think you've located a cute Cook chick.

This looks a lot better than the first set.

Nice shots and I also seem to be voting with the group on 1 and 2 being my favorites. Really nice. As to the subject of Canon auto ISO, it is a source of frustration not worth your time in attempting to get it to work IMO.

Lil - Cheers, i think i am getting to know the range limits of the 400 better, the first set where just too far away, and as such cropped to much in PP. Also getting to know the 50D better each time which helps

Off to see some Osprey this Friday - Hope they come close enough

Dave - cheers for the comments, Point noted on the Auto ISO, just going to have to learn the 50D more and get used to manual switching as needed.

Rob

I like the second one the best. You may need to check the custom function for the auto ISO. It should allow you to go higher. I do not have a 50D but I am sure this is true.

I also think for shots like this, it is better to use Av and keep an eye on the shutter speed. You can also choose Tv and use auto ISO to ensure that you get the desired speed. I routinely shoot ISO 800.

vivek - Thanks for the tip, i will check the custom functions.

TBH i usually shoot Av/Tv dependant on if i am more worried about DOF or shutter speed. The first 3 above are shot in this way. The as yet unknown little bird was shot in M while watching the indicator to ensure exposure would be ok (like the 50D as it let you change Aperture and Shutter Speed from the two dials, unlike my old 400D where you had to press a button)

Again - thanks for the info and comments much appreciated.

I'm with Lil, great improvement

Not sure about the auto ISO question, I never used it. I use a 50d and I am usually shooting 400 or 800, with 800 being the normal starting point for me. If I have enough light I'll go down. I'm liking 2 the best of the set

Tim - cheers for the comments

I am really not sure what i will settle on atm ISO wise. on my 400D i could not even think about going over 400 and now i have pictures that are ok at 1600 and v good upto 1000-1250. Just have to see what the next few thousand pics brings :P
