p.1 #1 · eqiuptment

I'm a beginner ( 2 years ) and looking for a start-up kit. Any ideas?
Have these lenses so far plus a flash: 50mm f/1.4, 28-135, 105 f/2.8 macro, & 55-250 f/4-5.6, Metz AF 58 flash. I frequent Kenrockwells' website often & ATP. The idea of the lenses are from ATP.

Well, the 50d would probably be a good choice. Or, there's a used 5d for the same money. what subjects do you like to shoot?

Do you not already have a camera body?

I hope you laugh when you visit Ken Rockewell's site.

Is that a 100 f2.8 macro? or something not made by Canon?

If you shoot sports & wildlife, get a 50D and some long primes.

if you shoot people & landscapes, get a 5D.

If you just goof off when you're shooting (nothing wrong with that at all!) any of the rebel bodies are fine too.

Hard to go wrong, really.

Are you looking to add lenses or replace the ones you have? What is your purpose? Have you a 40D now?

It appears that you have a very good "beginner" kit. Beginner being used very loosely. You have a great camera, assuming your name is an indication that you have a 40D, and lenses that cover a very wide variety of shooting situations. No need to go the the 50D, the 5D is a great camera, but still not necessary to move to it either.

Looking at what you have, I'd be looking for something wide,if you can spare a nice sum of $ the 17-55 2.8 is well placed in your kit. I use the EF-s 10-22 on my 30D (one of 2 reasons I'm keeping this body, the other is the 1.6 factor for my long end).

Any formal/classroom education or training? I found this to be the most valuable, and I used a Canon Rebel K2 for the first class I took, and learned a mint of knowledge that I'll use for the rest of my life. Local community college was my choice, and the instructor was a great older photographer who reall communicated well.

You've got a nice kit already. Is it a Nikon kit? They make a 105 mm f/2.8 macro. Are you looking to replace your entire set with Canon camera and lenses? This is the Canon forum.

Don't pay Ken Rockwell much attention. He's a doufus.

Consider the possibility that you don't need more equipment. Is there something specific that you find yourself unable to do, repeatedly, from time to time? Then maybe you could use a specific piece of equipment. Until then, save up your money or spend it on books, courses, or expenses like gas to get to locations.

It can't be a Nikon set as only Canon makes 28-135 lens (save from a very old Sigma). The 105/2.8 macro is most likely a Sigma.
