It appears that you have a very good "beginner" kit. Beginner being used very loosely. You have a great camera, assuming your name is an indication that you have a 40D, and lenses that cover a very wide variety of shooting situations. No need to go the the 50D, the 5D is a great camera, but still not necessary to move to it either.
Looking at what you have, I'd be looking for something wide,if you can spare a nice sum of $ the 17-55 2.8 is well placed in your kit. I use the EF-s 10-22 on my 30D (one of 2 reasons I'm keeping this body, the other is the 1.6 factor for my long end).
Any formal/classroom education or training? I found this to be the most valuable, and I used a Canon Rebel K2 for the first class I took, and learned a mint of knowledge that I'll use for the rest of my life. Local community college was my choice, and the instructor was a great older photographer who reall communicated well.
