Actually, I have shots where the trails are almost perfectly straight, but yes the trails of the green embers did zig zag and in the second shot you'll notice that a slight right-to-left breeze was blowing the embers to the left as they trailed out.
Again, I didn't ask my questions to get the IS lovers all lathered up. I was hoping we could discuss this so I could better understand how IS would have helped in shots like these fireworks shot or other images where extreme blur is the intended outcome (like the cool image Ariel posted of the dancers). To me it seems contradictory to what IS does or is for. With the kinds of cool heli shots Mark posted...I totally understand how one can use IS to have shutter speeds slow enough to blur the blades yet keep the body of the helicopters sharp....Show more →

Maybe I am thinking of the wrong person here. But I beleive you stated a few times IS was not worth the extra money?
Not really hard to understand what IS does. Its a handheld tripod nothing more . Doesnt replace a tripod but does help one handhold a shot when a tripod is not wanted. IS is not meant to stop the action just stop shakey hands. I for one cant see a long lens without IS.
I find it comical that there are still people out there who either don't believe IS is useful and or don't know how it works. Any and every FL can benefit from an IS system under certain circumstances--some more than others. I can understand why some believe they don't need it, but that's not to say its useless.

Most dangerous or most endangered?
BTW, the owl shot is awesome. 400mm at 1/20? Impressive stuff.
Happy shooting,
Yakim.
Cheers Yakim. It's the Most Dangerous. It can headbutt you with that hard shell on its head or it can kick you with a stilleto-like claw. Google "cassowary feet" and have a look.
I braced myself against a pillar for that owl shot. I know for sure I didn't use a tripod because eventhough I did bring a tripod, I accidentally left the quick release plate on my MP-E lens at home.
Yakim, I think your ideas are logical, but since when has Canon been logical. 5D II's have HD video, but the same AF system? Canon baited newcomers and crop-users (myself included) with a lens built like a Yugo. "IS, constant aperture, $900", Canon cried!

Viva the revolution!
No IS for you!
I agree. That's exactly why I didn't buy a 5D or 5D Mk II nor am I going to.
