Great. What I really like about this bag is that I can get a 50D gripped with 400mm 5.6 lens attached, 70-200 F4, 17-55 2.8 IS and my Eeee PC all into this bag. Note, that this is without hoods for the other 2 lenses. Hope you enjoy it too.

Does the UD35 allow a gripped camera (50D like) to have a 70-200 WITH the hood ON (in shooting position) in the bag along with a 17-55 IS and short lens (50mm f1.4) AND a 17" laptop?

Or...does the hood have to be reversed?

Or is a 17" laptop just too tight (even if within specs) and too much?

You most certainly can not havea 17 inch laptop in the bag in any way, shape or form. Look at the specs at thinktank.com. With a gripped camera, you fold over a section into the laptop area, so it goes from a 13 inch laptop to a 10 inch space. Check out the review I did here.

I recently got a 35 and it's great. With a 1DMkII, I actually don't have to put the flap down and I can fit a 13" MacBook Pro (just). I found the camera fits best rotated "sideways" from the way they show it, with the main grip towards the front of the bag.

Hi Kris,
Thanks for your answer.

This may not be the bag for me.

But...who wants to schlep around a 17" AND a big body AND long lens?

I am looking for a "discrete" looking bag that will allow a gripped camera with a 70-200mm (with hood on in shooting position) to be used so the camera and lens can be quickly pulled out, take a shot, and then put back in the bag (and carried while walking about). The key things I want are:

1. discrete look
Does not scream "Camera Bag"

2. Ability to keep it on the shoulder and get the lens/cam out without dumping other stuff

3. Ability to keep the hood on the lens (so no need to reverse lens hood prior to taking the shot).

The messenger bag style looks appealing for some of these reasons.

Any suggestions based on your (anyone's) experience with the TT UD line....or the LP Stealth Reporter series?

I am not interested in a Backpack style. Sling maybe.

Steady - the 35 cannot swallow a 70-200 with the hood in shooting position while attached to the camera. 24-70 sized lens can be stored with the hood in shooting position. It's very easy to work out of and lens swaps are simple.

Before getting this, I tried the similar in concept LP "classified" series of the same basic size (160, I think) as the TT UD35. I actually like the look of the LP a little better (somewhat more discrete, in my opinion) but it was much harder for me to get the camera in and out of and offered somewhat less flexibility. Also, it didn't have the laptop compartment. Depending on the specific kit that you're looking to carry though, it could work for you.

I think that the UD35 should fit a 700-200 f4 with hood in shooting position. I'm pretty sure I tried that while I was evaluating it. The 70-200 2.8 probably would not fit with hood on.

The TT U35 holds my D300 with a grip and the 70-200VR with hood in the shooting position. Its close but you can still zip the top. Im not sure if there is a large size difference between the Canon and Nikon 70-200s though.

I can also hold a wider lens and a flash inside along with the 70-200. I use the laptop area for filters and batteries. The U35 is one of my favorite bags.

I've actually had a 70-200Vr, 300 f/4, two TCs, and my 17-55 f/2.8 all inside the bag. It was tight but fit.

One other thing to consider about this bag is that you can buy the shoulder strap and convert it from a messenger style bag to backpack (without a waist belt). It has a slim profile and fits very comfortably on my back.

Absolutely.

And as far as the 70-200's go - I was apparently mistaken...shouldn't have assumed that none would fit with the hood. Sorry for the mis-information.

Even the UD60 won't take a body + 70-200/2.8 with the hood in shooting position, it would have to be a pretty deep bag. I can put my 1D Mark III, (with hood reversed) two more substantially sized lenses, (IE 100-400 & 24-105) as well as a 17" laptop... Which makes it great for traveling 'light'.

Just for kicks and because they were set up ... I measured a couple of mine with hoods extended ready to shoot:

13.5" --- 5D-II with 100-400 hood extended
13.8" --- 40D with 70-200/2.8 hood extended
(they are about 3.5" shorter with the hood reversed and a lens cap on)

Looking through the specs on the bags I own, not too many are going to hold these cameras in the "ready-to-shoot" position with the top able to be closed.

The UD35 comes the closest at 13.25", UD60 is 11.25", UD40 is 10.25".

sorry to dredge this up, but i'm considering this bag and read some reviews that said it is difficult to get the camera out while the bag is on your shoulder. is this accurate or is it not a big deal?

I think all the nylon bags "look" like camera bags...especially the TT bags since all the camera stores carry them and so many people have them...and nothing screams "electronic gear enclosed" more than black nylon. Personally, I'm a Billingham fan. nice canvas bag that just looks like, well, a nice canvas bag (and they last forever, you can't wear them out). Could be anything in there and so few people are willing to spend the $$ to buy them that I rarely see them, hence they don't say camera enclosed. Some of them, like the Hadley line are less boxey and more like a briefcase/messager bag. Personal preference of course but all the black nylon computer bags and camera bags just turn me off...looks like every bag at Best Buy. But if I HAD to get another black nylon bag, I prefer LowePro because the padding is thicker in general and build quality is tops. Almost any camera bag from any mfgr. is going to be made to have a camera go in and out quickly...that is point. Good luck Steady, there is no right answer, it is all personal.

i understand the 'personal' comment. i've probably gone through at least a dozen bags over the years looking for the perfect one. i finally had a few bags that i liked for different situations and then i go ahead and get a d3 with some other large glass and i'm out there looking (and buying) again! imho the tt bags are a higher quality than the lp bags, but the latter are certainly good and i've used a few of them.

at this point i'm not sure what i want except that i need something to carry the d3 and 70-200 with maybe one other lens (24-70) around, not for hiking but every day usage. that's why i'm thinking about buying a kata h-16 holster or maybe an urban disguise 35 or kata t-216. if i do i have to sell some of my current inventory however! so far i've listed a lp inverse 100, slingshot 300, and mountainsmith parallax (great big backpack) locally on cl to get the ball rolling....

i need help.
