p.1 #1 · LR2.0 64-bit compatible?

I have a purchased version (hard copy) of the Lightroom V2.0. Very soon, I will be upgrading my PC to a 64-bit Vista environment.

When I first install it, will my LR V2.0 install and work fine in a 64 bit environment? If so, then I presume it will automatically update itself to V2.4 without much trouble?

Lastly, do I NEED Photoshop 4.0 in a 64-bit Vista environment? Can I continue to use PS 3?

LR 2.0 will automatically install its 64bit version on 64bit Vista.

CS3 isn't a 64bit app BUT it should still work in 32bit mode on a 64bit OS.

First: Lightroom auto detects 32/64bit and installs it's self accordingly.

B: The 2.4 "upgrade" is really the same file as the full install. You could download and install it, skipping 2.0 completely. Just give it your key when it asks.

3: CS3 will work fine on 64bit Vista. CS4 64bit will just be that much better.

Delta: All 32bit software will run just fine on 64bit Windows. If a 64bit version is available it will usually work a little better. So use 64 if you can, if not don't fret.

That only matters when you are using 64bit photoshop, not 64bit windows.

Lightroom 2 does not automatically install as a 64-bit application on a 64-bit operating system. The installation routine is set to install the 32-bit version so the user has to manually configure the routine to install the 64-bit version instead.

Here's how its done with the downloadable version of Lightroom from Adobe.

1. Double-click the file downloaded from Adobe and it will expand to a new folder with several files.
2. One of those files is "Install Lightroom 2.x.exe" If you double click that file it will install the 32-bit version.
3. Instead open the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 folder and inside are two files; setup32.exe and setup64.exe. Double-click the setup64.exe file and the 64-bit version will be installed.

N.B. This is with the downloadable version; I've stopped buying Adobe software on disks so I've always just downloaded Lightroom since it was in beta. This is how the downloadable version works on a 64-bit Windows system; if you're on a Mac your mileage may vary.

You don't need the latest version of Photoshop but you'll miss out on a number of improvements that tightly integrate Lightroom with Photoshop. If you install Photoshop first, Lightroom will detect it and set up an option for you to seamlessly transfer files over to Photoshop for further processing.

Also, once Lightroom is installed it is set by default to connect to the internet and detect if any updates are available. The current version of Lightroom is 2.4 which was released last week so you'll definitely need to update.

ahhh...never mind my earlier post....I'm still running Windows XP 64-bit, which isn't officially supported by Adobe, on my production systems hence the reason for the workaround. See here: http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2008/08/lightroom_64bit_on_xp_x64_1.html

It installs just fine on my Vista 64-bit systems.

What about CS3? I know it is a 32-bit application, but would it at least work in 64-bit Vista, or do I have to upgrade to CS4??

Watch out for your printer drivers with 64 bit. I was going nuts with problems with my Epson 2200 in LR. The problem was that the drivers were not 64 bit and various options in print setup were disabled. You need to setup the print tamplates in 32 bit. Once setup, it works fine in 64. I do not know if this is the same for all printers.

In Win7 CS3 runs as a 32bit application so I assume it would do so in Vista also. It will run but won't take advantage of the 64bit features (eg. access more than 3GB of RAM). CS4 is the first PhotoShop to run as a 64bit app.
