p.1 #1 · Unusual clouds...

Some very unusual clouds formed after the heavy rain we had this past Friday. A friend told me these are mammatus clouds. Never seen anything like it. The setting sun casted an amber/orange tint on everything. Was surreal!

Thanks for looking!
Chris

Odd that you posted this, Chris. Where are you located?

Here in the Suburbs of NYC, this past Friday at around 8pm, we also had bizarre clouds, and the entire landscape was lit up like God had put a big magenta filter in the sky. (like you show in pics 4 & 5, but even moreso) Everyone noticed and was talking about it. It was very other-worldly, I'd never seen anything like it before.

I couldn't believe that I didn't have my 5D with me.

Hi Chris.

I'm so happy that someone captured these! I was at the Blonde Redhead show in Prospect Park last Friday (Celebrate Brooklyn), and was in awe of these formations. From your shots, I'd say you were in and around Cadman Plaza, correct?

"Popcorn Sky"

Very interesting to see (even better to experience).

Thanks for posting. I like seeing things like this as atmospheric effects/phenomenon are "wonderful."

You saw it too! I'm in the Union Square area. My wife called me while on her way from work. Told me to look out the window. For once I listened to her I grabbed my camera and climbed out onto our fire escape Was a sight to see!

Great shots. Really shows the color and cloud formations well.
I've seen that once in my 70 years, here in Texas. Like you said, they're not your every-day clouds!
I like the way you captured the coloring on the buildings and the people. Well done!

I'm surprised no one else shot these clouds. Now I'm really glad I listened to my wife You saw them in Brooklyn? From where I was it looked like stormy clouds to the east of me, Union Square area. I thought the Subway Series wasn't going to be played

Thanks mkweaver! Wow, once in 70 years! I better make sure I don't delete these photos. I included the Con Ed building because I though people wouldn't believe the color of the sky The street shot was my wives idea, thanks honey! Those really show how amber/orange the surrounds were.

I was on Madison and 96st when I saw these clouds...and then the torrent began. WOW!

By the time I got to Queens the sun and then a beautiful rainbow appeared. What was even more amazing was that the rainbow encased a series of lightning bolts streaking across the eastern sky. Like cableaddict wrote, the landscape was lit as if looking through a filter. Very surreal.

Dec 21, 2012...maybe?

I too wish I had my camera!

Nice captures. Those look much more exaggerated than any mammatus I've seen before. Great colors.

And this is the beauty of photography!!! I may never get a chance to see clouds like that in person, and certainly not in that location from that view. The fact that you listened to your wife (we'll let you keep your man card since you made these captures... ) and made the effort and then posted the results means that some of us are seeing something we may never have experienced otherwise.

That's why I enjoy the forums I go to that don't "critique" unless it's asked for. Sometimes a technically not so perfect shot still allows me to see some awesome sights that I never would have seen otherwise.

Thanks for posting these great shots!
