A question for you on something like this. Do you ask the owner to take a shot, or do you just do a quick grab? I've always felt a bit self-conscious about taking shots like this.

Appreciate your detailed observations and helpful suggestions.
It was a small bakery with friendly staff (owners?) behind the counter. I smiled at them, and they beamed proudly back at me. So I guess I got permission. Did the same thing in several locations in the North End, with only welcoming nods.
But I was down in Edgewater, NJ, across from NYC shooting images in a Japanese supermarket. And told to stop. Different folks, maybe just a different culture. It really took me by suprise to be told photos were not allowed. But why not?
