Very sorry to see your 5D in this condition

I could imagine Canon does not anticipate anybody to do that himself.
I found these links once, related to a repair of a mirror of a 300D.
http://users.abo.fi/jskata/300Drepair/
http://www.lotek.nu/misc/EOS_300D_sub-mirror_repair/

I did not want to go through that and left this camera as it is (manual focus only).

I could not find a similar instruction for the 5D but maybe there is one.
If you want to do that by your own.
Good luck!

Jim,

I regret your mirror dilemma.

Is it not possible to reattach the mirror with adhesive? Isn't that what was holding it on in the first place?

Although it may well be the last thing on your mind, perhaps this offers a rare opportunity. Shaving the new mirror outside of the mirror box before installation would not only keep the debris out of your camera but would also permit the use of a better securing method for the mirror while carrying out the surgery. This way you would be able to virtually isolate the kind of high frequency vibrations associated with the cutting process. It was perhaps these vibrations from the original shaving process that caused or contributed to the detachment.

You might also be able to investigate having the mirror cut professionally using a laser technique.

There was a Canon "memo", on some 5D mirrors coming loose and yesterday, Canon confirmed replacement of the whole mirror assembly, at no charge. So, I narrowly skirted a $300+ repair bill.

The mirror on this 5D, which is apparently defective, had a very thin plastic film adhesive holding it to the mirror frame. The way I noticed it was about to come off was because the viewfinder was way off on the focus, when it had been perfect before. I then notice that one corner of the mirror was not resting on the stop on the side of the mirrorbox, thus throwing off the viewfinder focus. The mirror was separating from the frame.

Yes, I could play around with the mirror, grinding off a little more, re gluing it back in the frame, hoping the glue thickness is the same as before, then maybe having to test and shim for accurate focus, but I would still have glass dust flying around in there and a ugly mirror. When the mirror separated completely, there was a layer of glass dust covering the back side of the mirror, as the frame is just a frame (center part open for the secondary mirror). Or, I can get the whole mirror assembly replaced, mirrorbox cleaned, as new at n/c, and I'm back where I started from.

The big question is do I start over with the dremel or not. I'm inclinded to find a lens solution that doesn't require the shortened mirror. That way, with a stock mirror I can test all these FL55/1.2s for mirror clearance. That one is right on the borderline for mirror clearance at infinity.

For me, my lens solution is the 28 R Elmarit, 60 R Elmarit (essentially a slower close focusing Summicron), and a fast 85, which brings me back to the FD85L. I still have a perfect Rokkor 58, but I'd rather have the fast aperture around the 85mm focal length. I think the FD85L beats the 80 R Summilux on wide open sharpness and contrast. Like its little brother FD50L, the FD85L has no focus shift, in my opinion, indicative of superior optical design.

Really, the EF 85L mk 1 or 2 is the answer here. A nice mk 1 can be had for prices close to or equal the FD 85L (+ conversion labor/costs).

Don't know about 85, but Ai-S 50/1.2 clears my 5D mirror without any issue.

Where is this info about mirror assembly replacement posted at?

It is getting that way, isn't it. There was a time when there were deals to be had on the FD 85s, but things have changed.

On the other hand, the EFs and FDs are different beasts with respect to usability and there are pros and cons to each. Moreover, the pros and cons will change based on user preference.

So, while a used EF 85/1.2 mk1 does make a nice alternative (did I just say that? ) it might not be the ideal choice for some of us. I suspect there are those who would opt for one of the FDs regardless of price.

Yeah, I always dreamt of a smaller MF lens with the same amazing image qualities of the 85L. I tried Nikon, Contax, Leica, Oly, nothing could really match the 85L. But in the end I found it! It was --- also an 85L. Grandpa 85L

The Rokkor 85/1.7?

It's a very nice lens as far as slow 85s go

Seriously, I really liked mine ,but this SSC Asph. is just soooo good.

I still like my Rokkor (now bent on filter ring, so sad). I don't think I'll spend $1k on a lens in the next year or more. But that's me.

I think you mean the Rokkor 58 1.2 which I still use and love.

Mine arrived today, tomorrow I'll be shopping for DIY tools to start on the conversion.

Current fast glass collection, taken with nikkor 28/2

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q69/Blknoel/_MG_1478.jpg

That leaves a 35/1.4 to collect and I guess I'll be done for a long while

Congrats Leon!

If you don't already have a good idea how to do the conversion, let me know. I cannot promise a write-up like my Rokkor 58/1.2 page (due to my commitment to spend less time on this stuff) but I could take some photos and jot down some quick notes if it would be helpful. Actually, take some photos of the unaltered mount so I can point out some important things. Looking at a converted one might not be enough.

Oh, the Rokkor 58/1.2?

Of course I still love mine! The 85/1.2 SSC Asph. is sharper wide open, but the Rokkor is no slouch and the focal length is more versatile than the 85, for me.
