p.1 #1 · Show us your sad makeshift studio

Thought this would be a fun side thread.

Here's one I set up in a garage for some plant shots.

http://www.phylumphotography.com/random/20090613_plants_0053.jpg

Note the photo-critical gear such as the little red wagon and baby stroller.

One of the leaves on the concrete step by the door, right under the C-stand arm, is this one:

Extra points if your Sad Makeshift Studio (SMS) has neighborhood cats, discarded bathroom fixtures, or holes in the ceiling.

jcolwell, you do get extra SMS points, since you appear to be triggering Elinchroms with an on-camera flash.

Ron, I have no idea what that thing is (my best guess: an underground fire hydrant), but it's cool.

Yep, it's a 580EX on M at 1/16 power. It also fires a Sunpak 622 on the background, for those times I want it lit up.

Greg,

Imagine the strainer basket for a home pool but these strainers do the same thing except for water parks.

John, bedsheets are a staple of any proper makeshift studio. Well done.

Ron, that thing just keeps looking cooler.

Nicely makeshifted, everyone!

Old studio (in basement of house)
http://images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/15000-19999/16648/800/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_304745.jpg

and a photo from then (may 08 ish)
http://www.pbase.com/cpphotography/image/98097664.jpg

Then I started to use my detached garage...
http://images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/15000-19999/16648/800/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_745382.jpg

shot some 30 seniors plus more in there, now it's a completely finished space. I'm really surprised clients didn't take one look and run for the hills!

Here's the same space (see garage door track in ceiling) last december when I started to move back in)

Calumet 8x8 white backdrop. A Profoto AcuteB 600R with a large PCB PLM about 18' from the engine/cart.. The cart the engine is sitting on will be cut-out is PS and will be on a white background for use in a catalog and web site.

Can you post a final image of this shot?

I forgot I started this thread. I've since set up a semipermanent makeshift setup for small product shots. The business end of the thing is two Dynalite 2040 heads on Manfrotto articulating arms, all superclamped to my office desk. I'll have to take a shot of it soon.

That's not a sad, makeshift studio; that's nice!

What direction does that window face? It looks like you could do some great windowlight portraits.

I thought this was a "sad" makeshift studio thread?

Anyway, I think I take the prize here. This was done before I got my strobes and wanted to experiment with lighting. Talk about ghetto!!!

500w work lights, pillow covers and a bed sheet. Not very stable and VERY dangerous!!

Results

! In all seriousness I've been lucky to have my company let me use their warehouse for my studio needs. Maybe I can get a pic next time I shoot there.

Oh, I thought the thread was for sad photographers . I should be able to put the space to good use as soon as I learn what the hell I'm doing.

Faces north. Here a window portrait.

Nice!

I love northlight (southlight for those living down under). If/when I get the funds for my own studio, that'll be my most important criterion.

My studio is a Pelican 1510/1620/1550 depending with equipment in it. A lightstand bag/case with the other stuffs in it. This little wrap up that my background stand goes in. The muslin is either in one of those sterlite containers, or a backpack.

Then it goes into the back of my Accord.

My house sucks for space so there's like no way anything is happening in here. I swear to someone that whoever designed my house did it with annoying me in mind.

My garage looks too "workshop/garage" to double as a studio. Then on top of that, I don't like to let people to know where I live.
