It's been some time since I've posted here but a recent event is one that I'd like to share.
A pair of Pileated Woodpeckers had chosen an old oak tree 30 yards from the foundation of a new home project I have under construction. The pair had been working on the "excavaton" of their new nest (as I worked on one for my clients) since early March. The past few weeks I have been waiting for a sign of new life from the hole. Well...since a week ago, thinks have been busy for the parents. These two nestlings have been keeping mom and dad busy searching for goodies as they squawk for food from the nest hole.
Great shots of this little family, and in the dark no less. Looks like the exposure was pretty good; a bit of noise reduction in software should work well here. Nice captures!
How cool to see pileateds and their young. Maybe try for some overcast afternoon conditions for best light and shoot in portrait orientation to get all the bird in the frame.
What a wonderful opportunity with which you've done a great job. Lots of waiting for a few seconds of frenzied activity, isn't it? I'd like to see, and hear, more about these rascals as they're one of my favorites.
What an awesome opportunity you have there, Tom. While the afternoon light definitely helped you to lower the ISO it also created some strong light to have to contend with (maybe requiring some EV compensation). I have wanted to capture some Pileated WP's for a while but have not had any luck at finding any. What part of the country are you in?
Sounds like an ideal situation, having the blind elevated up closer to the bird's level.
