I tried shooting some in RAW just now and it is still exhibiting posterization Socrate. Maybe its something in my camera settings. I'll keep experimenting and see if it goes away.
Okay, Conrad I clearly don't know your workflow but here are a few tips to avoid posterization:
- shoot RAW. Glad to here you already decided to do so , then you need to convert the files to a high bit format: TIFF, 16-bitJPEG.
- work on 16 bits (or 24 bits) images because they provide a lot more color levels. A lot more!
- save your files in a lossless format to avoid posterization due to excessive editing
- use adjustment layers during your editing
- go easy on the Curves adjustment
If after this you still get banding or posterization, one way to get rid of that is to use Gaussian Blur to smooth it out
Great series Conrad!
Very good job on these IF shots. I especially like 1, 4, 3 and 8.
I could see you blurring that BG in 4 a little more to maybe make that one even better
The Osprey shot in 1 is killer!

Corad, these are beautiful. The Osprey and White Pelican are just killer shots and the Brown Pelican is my third favorite. You did a great job on all of these, however. As BIF go, these are very, very nice shots indeed.
