Well I just noticed this on DPR, the answer to a lot of people's pain. Full manual control over 5d Mk2 video available as a firmware update June 2, 2009

Cool.

Wonder if the lowly T1i will ever get the same feature enabled.

Big news... They don't usually make that large of a change in a firmware upgrade.

Frankly it is a big marketing missile but from a software standpoint it was a fairly simple change. This does change the game a bit in HD video, congrats to Canon for listening to their users for once.

I just got an email from Canon about this. It says early June. The operative language - "firmware update that enables manual exposure controls while shooting video, including: ISO, aperture and shutter speed."

Fantastic news that makes the camera a much more powerful force in the video world. Now what should I do with all the Olympus OM mount lenses and adapters I have collected to use for manual aperature control? I may just need to investigate their use for still photos.

haha I had a feeling this was going to happen, back when Canon Aus had a promotional event one of the invited videography pro's accidentally said something along the lines of "...whilst the 5D2 hasn't got manual control, well at least not yet...)

Keep them Roland, they are still great lens and you will now have lots of video options.

Agreed. This does seem to be the first time they've done this in awhile.

Indeed, huge. I wonder if they'll update the user manual?

Another firmware upgrade I would like to see (even more than this one) is spot metering linked to active the AF point like the 1D series.

I hope everyone that wanted a 5DMK2 already purchased theirs. If half the people on the video sites that said they were waiting for manual control buy one there will be a shortage.

Now I just have to figure out how to use Premier Pro CS4.

This frankly opens up some real revenue opportunities for our Wedding Photographer friends, many but not all are going to rethink creating some high quality video of the key moments.

Wow, that's probably the BIGGEST thing that had been keeping me from buying a 5d2. Now I'm really salivating.

Do you think Canon can offer a firmware patch to improve the AF too?

The 5d Mk2 autofocus is just fine, would I like to bolt the AF from my IDsMk3 into it, yes, but if you buy you will be happy.

The AF is mostly hardware (cross type sensors as opposed normal sensors), so no, it'll never be updated. I still have 0 complaints about the AF on my 5d2, though. It's never let me down, and I've owned a 1d2 and 1d3.

So does manual control of shutter speed mean 24fps if we want it, or....?

Extremely brief press release, no mention of 24fps, but we will have to wait for more information. My opinion is that 30fps remains as is.
